After almost 10years of service my Spyderco Police model is getting alittle long in the tooth and I think it's time for a replacement. Heres the ones I'm thinking about to replace it.

Spyderco Rookie in ats55
CRKT KFF in Black teflon in aus6
Cammillus EDC in 154cm
Kershaw Blackout in 440a

Notice none are serrated the reason is that when I carry the police I usually carried a small crkt mirage to use infront of people and found the plain edge more handy for what I use it for. I want it for everyday cutting chores but want to have something that can be used for self defense if the need arises (it has in the past). If anybody can chime in on the pros/cons of certain knives or have another choice in the 50.00 range I'd appreciate it.

I would recommend the FRN Endura PE in VG-10.

1. Excellent workhorse of a knife,
2. in your price range,
3. VG-10 steel--easy to sharpen, holds an edge, great corrosion resistance.

If you're looking for a smaller blade, check out the FRN Native. I have personally never tried out the Rookie, but have heard nothing but good things about it. From what I understand though, they are somewhat hard to find.

Good Luck. ;)

...And with its' blade being slightly under 4", the Endura is "legal carry" in more places than the Police model is, with the Police models' slightly over 4" blade.

I own and like the Camillus EDC and Kershaw Blackout alot, they are very handy knives for general utility.
They would also be terrible ideas for defense knives, since both are petite and neither sport guards, finger choils, or handle textures that'll stop a grip slip. The quarter-pint of blood I lost to my Blackout slipping in the reverse grip was enough to convince me never to try that, and the grip of the Camillus EDC is even less secure in terms of vertical movement, these knives just aren't designed to acquiese to your hand during a stab, they are light use folders (at which they excell) but little more.

On the other the hand the high "hole bump" on my Spyderco Endura makes me feel pretty secure when applying the reverse grip, it acts sort of like half a guard and while it isn't perfect, I don't worry about slippage much (it's a big bump).

Spyderco Vesuvius, Renegade or blackhawk, all around 50-60 bucks all great knives for the money, Im partial to the Vesuvius, it just feels right in the hand, has a stout blade for it's size. Don't care much for the Vesuvius with the inserts though, kind of cheapens the look of the knife but the Spyderco bug inset in the handle is kewl looking. most of kershaw's knives are in that price range or less, and are very nice knives for the money, Ken Onion seems to have done a world of good for Kershaw.

I would have to agree on the Endura, all though I got mine when the knife was still made of ATS-55, and it is a workhorse. I can cut anything with it and it gets a razor sharp edge after sharpening. The tip is fairly strong, it is well balanced, it is easy to manuever in your hand, and has grooves for your fingers so it doesn't slip easily. If the new VG-10 blade is as good as ATS-55, then this is my top pick.

My VG-10 Endura cuts like crazy.... I should've got the PE but I can't find a place that sells it at that price (after considering duty, tax, etc...)

Yeah, Endura is a nice knife and great for what you are asking for. However, I have another suggestion which is just purely my opinion. The CRKT Apache in ATS-34 is pretty good. It can be used for fighting and utility. Its got a guard and nice long handle to fit most people's hand. This is one of my EDC's.

Have you checked out the Benchmade Griptilians? They have great ergonomics, as well as good blade material. The Axis lock is a plus, as well. With the checkering on the handles, they offer pretty good retention in the hand.
