Okay, I give up. I’m gonna buy a CRK One-Piece Knife, but I need help deciding which one. So far, here’s what I know:

1) It’s going to be used as an all-around field knife.
2) I’m pretty sure I want a 5.5” blade, because I’m concerned about the handle size on the 4” models.
3) Can’t decide if I want a single or double guard.

So, which knife do you like in each comparison?

Single guards
Mountaineer II or Sable IV

Double guards
Mark VI or Shadow IV

After I narrow it down here, I'll choose between a single or double guard.

Many thanks for your help! :)

I like the single guard one piece knives my self.
I have a mountaineer 1 and a sable, both really good knives

Thanks for your input. I'm leaning towards the Sable IV before they're gone.

I see no need for a double guard for civilian applications, although the top guard on CRK knives is not really in the way. You're probably right to go for the 5.5" as the handle on the 4" is a bit short for heavy use.

I like the Sables myself. Good general purpose design, a sort of CRK puukko.

I'm on board with all of this. So much so that I just ordered the last Sable IV from Knifecenter. :)

It's really surprising to me that the Sable was discontinued as it does seem to be the most user friendly design in the one-piece line.

Here's a good internet pic...

Sable arrived. Very nice knife. Nicely proportioned. Great finish, workmanship, and balance. Extremely sharp.

The sheath is of very high quality. My only question are the several long, easily visable, streaks in the sheath's finish. Is this normal on CRK sheaths?

Other than that, I'm very happy with it. :)

Unfortunately, I do not own a digital camera. The streaks are quite visable. The sheath does not have an even finish.

It's not that big of a deal. I was just wondering if the streaks are common.

Well, after much deliberation, I returned the Sable IV and replaced it with a Mountaineer I. The Sable is a beautiful knife, but in the end, its weight and blade length had me reconsidering which model best fits my needs.

At first, I was concerned about the M1 handle being too short, but after receiving it and even though the handle is on the small size, it is surprising comfortable. Overall, I really like the M1's compact size, weight, and thin, four inch blade. It is not a knife for prying, digging, or chopping, but I never do those things with a knife anyway.

So, if anyone else is considering a 4" model, I'll be the first to admit that I was wrong about the handle being too small and those CRK folks must know what they are doing. :o :D

After seeing the tests done on chris reeves knives on knifetests, I fond myself a little hesitant to buy one of his fixed blades. I know ill never do most those things to a knife but it still makes me worry about them. I know he doesnt heat treat them as hard as others so how is the edge retention? I love chris reeve knives, so dont think im trying to bacsh them because im not. I love the looks of the mountaineer 1. I ask because I am looking at getting a new hunting knife/camping knife and i've been looking at the mountaineer 1 but also some Bark River knives and I just dont know what to get. Sorry, I hope im not hijacking this thread

Not hijacking at all. I'm not sure about the edge retention because I just received the knife a few days ago. Perhaps someone who has owned a One-Piece model for a while will chime in.
