My friend wants a new hunting/skinning knife. His request included not having to sharpen it much. I was thinking about something in D2/A2 or maybe S30V. Now he thought his last Gerber was awesome, so I'm sure he'll flip out over what many people here pay for a "good" knife. So keep cost in mind.

one of cabela's alaskan guide vanguards would do the job.that said the best little skinner I've ever used is a BRKt mini canadian.

I like BRKT's mini-Skinner (12C27 stainless) ($80 and up, depending on scales) or...
Buck's Alpha or mini-Alpha Hunter (ATS-34 and 154CM) ($70 - $80, depending on vendor)

I love BRKT's mini-Canadian, but it's a little small for a general hunter/camper. The mini-Skinner's blade is only slightly longer. Both are good companions to a larger blade.

Your friend's request to not have to sharpen it much can only come true if the knife is not used. I would discard the notion of finding a steel that holds an edge longest. ALL knife steels will hold an edge until it needs sharpening ( :D )

Your bud will need to have someone sharpen it periodically or learn how to do it. You might think about recommending a $40 Sharpmaker or stone to go with it.

I think even $80 is going to be a bit much for him. He doesn't want to never have to sharpen it, just very infrequently. He sucks at hunting too, so it won't see a lot of use. LOL

Take a look at the SOG Field Pup. I have one. Razor sharp. For a knife that you actually use hunting, it is a good one. You don't need a BIG knife for typical hunting chores. Price is pretty reasonable. I have picked them up for $25, but a bit higher is normal. Retail is $60. http://sogknives.com/store/FP-3.html If he wants something bigger, check out he Northwest Ranger model. It also is a nice blade.

Another one to consider is the Spyderco Moran fixed blade. It is a sweet knife. Yes, I have one of these too.

I usually carry a folder too. Of late it has been a Remington bullet knife. Frankly it is plenty for most hunting chores.

Hehe. Well, in that case, he could get a Mora for about 10 to 30 dollars. They're not throw-aways, a search on "Mora" in this forum would convince you they're good knives.

One of my favorite little knives to take hunting is a Greco Caper. He lists it as a bird/trout knife, but it is very adept at small game as well. It is 52100, which I've had very good luck with, and he puts a wicked edge on them that is easy to maintain.

I second the Mora suggestion. I don't know their US prices, but here in Scandinavia you can get them for 2 to 6 € depending on the model. They're very much decent knives, and extremely good value for the money. So, like he said, they're not "throw-aways" based on quality, but if you want to use them as throw-aways, they are in fact cheap enough for just that. :)
