i was in town today and decided to go through the pawn shops that i have been thru many times without much success.
i came across a double bit collins head that weighs 1 1/4 lb. it measures 6 3/8th across in length, width is 2 1/16th. the eye is 1 5/8th x 3/8.
i have been searching on the net for info without much success, so i thought i would check in with you fellows.
i was thinking of putting a handle on it and making a sheath then give to the wife for her B-day.
do any of you fellows know anything about this collins?
thanks...
btw; i paid 5 dollars and 85 cents for it. it seems to be old and in "like new condition"... i know i've never seen one like this before...

Nice score! I don't know much about that little axe, I think they're usually called saddle axes. Never actually seen one in person though.

Yes, if it looks like this one-

.

Then it's a Saddle axe, they were made for many years, but are a rare and expensive axe to find now. Most I see are from post WWII- 70's.

Here's a good history on the Collins axe lines - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/841807-Collins-Axes-and-a-bit-on-Machetes. .

Just the bit would be $50-75, usually. Nicely rehandled 100-150. Perfect, from factory with sheath $200-300 . Those are the ranges I've seen.

WOW!!!
thank you guys. i want to post pics, but to be honest i don't know how. my wife does, but since i'm going to give it to her for her B-day i can't ask her because she dosen't know about it. her B-day is may 20. so after i find or make a handle and sheath for it and give it to her i'll get her to post pics.
BTW; an old friend of mine (68yr old) gave me a Norlund hatchet head on sunday. he's had it for 30yrs and it was given to him. it's never been used...
i've taken pics and am going to get the wife to help me post pics of it soon...
thanks

That is a great score for sure! At $5.85 that is a steal! Not many manufacturers produced double bit hatchets; Queen, Norlund, and Collins are all that come to mind right now. They are scarce so they usually bring top dollar. Looking forward to seeing the pictures!

The pawn shops in my area want $50 for a Chinese made axe. You are super lucky to have found that

Ya got a bargain, wanna double your money? just kidding, no really. great find. make yourself or modify a handle and you will have a great little axe. I would say a good length would be 15 to 18 inches.

That is a great score. People seem to fight over these on ebay all the time, as they closely resemble the axe that Nessmuk describes in his book. I usually see them in the $200 range when finished.
