Hi All, i was hoping someone can assist and maybe someone already performed this modification and have some recommendations. I currently build golf clubs and was using a HF 1x30 belt sander, as it runs at 3400 RPM to turn down golf ferrules. I wanted to convert the belt sander into a variable speed belt sander, I like to have an adjustable belt sander that ranges from a RPM of 100 - 3500.
My issue is with so so many motors, i just do not know one to choose. I also do not want to spend more than $100 for a motor, Power transformer and speed controller. I've seen other use sewer machine motors, treadmill motors, Electric scooter again just don't know which combo to use.

And I want to apologize if this was discussed already

Can someone please help me decide on the following
1. DC brush motor 12V or 36V or 48V and recommended watts
2. Power from 110V to 12V/36V/48V
3. DC Motor Speed Controller Switch

Thank you so much in advance
Eddie

You are considering putting many hundreds of dollars into a $50 belt grinder and at the end of the day it's still not a very good tool. I'm not trash talking the grinder, I have one and have made some modifications myself. In fact, just this morning I installed the larger work rest I made. I intend to use it for limited stuff. Have you looked at the Grizzly grinder/sander? It has all the stuff you want already. It's not a great grinder, but many times better than the HF. Good luck

Why, what part do you NEED for it to be slower?
I don't customize golf clubs....

If it's only a few steps requiring slow speed...?

Could you use what you have, and just file, or hand sand the remaining bits?
If it's only a few minutes of work?

I agree about not wasting time or money with a cheap grinder.

(Cheap 1x12)
Lee Valley grinder kit
Grizzly
Kalamazoo
Coote
Pheer
Reeder

In order of cheap upwards in order (my opinion)

I Was going to go with Coote, very well made, when I got sick of my 1x12, but then jumped up to a Pheer.... I Love my grinder, everything about it. But 2x72 is probably overkill for what you need.

Converting it would be more work ... and probably more cost ... than it is worth. And, in the end, you will have a cobbled together grinder with low power and limited use.

You can buy a brand-new variable speed Grizzly 1X30" with a 6" disc on the side from Home Depot and other places for around $180. HD usually has 10% off coupons/codes you can find online.

The one Stacy is referring to is 1900–3200 FPM. At 1900, that's almost half the speed of the HF model. Grizzly's 2x42 (T32459) is more expensive, but offers much better variable speed. It's on sale now for $30 less than what I paid for it. At $270+ it's way cheaper than adding speed control to the HF, and a better tool.
