Hey guys and gals.

Looking for some recommendations for a gift for my brother. Its his bday coming up and I wanted to get him another knife. He has been carrying his SOG Trident in Aus-8 for years now and loves it. But I want to get him something better. Assisted opening is a must as well as a 3.75" or larger blade. I am by no means a expert in metalurgy so I value all your advice when it comes to suggestions. I know I'd like to get him something durable and reliable as the SOG has been for him already. He uses it for everything. We repossess houses for a living so as a part of that we break into houses and do rehab work as well. So this thing has to be tough. I know he has had his eye on a buck paradigm Pro and a benchmade also. I know he likes what he's read about M390 but with all the googling ive done I have yet to find a assisted opener in m390 that is under 250 dollars. Id like to limit this to 250 just because of how hard he is on knives.

THanks in advance to all who comment on here.

Brian

A ZT 0350 sounds perfect for him. It's a 3.25 inch blade, though, so I hope that's not a deal-breaker.

Yeah it needs to be a fairly large blade because he has freaking gorilla hands. But thank you. I have been checking out the zt blades and was thinking about the one in elmax I believe its the 0560 but I can't seem to figure out if its assisted. I have a mule in elmax and love it.

The 0560 is not assisted. If you're willing to give up that particular feature, it opens up a whole world of possibilities. Have you considered just opting for a fixed blade instead?

Yeah I have. He wants a assisted folder. It has not been easy trying to find one trust me. Hes super picky.

That's why the make the 0300. It's pretty pricy for a casual gift though.

I saw that one after you posted this and I don't think he'd really like that. I was looking at the htm gunhammer torpedo assisted. Just looks nice beefy and heavy duty. or the Benchmade 581S Barrage AXIS-Assisted in M390. but what I read on it in the forums not a lot of people like it. They like the bm 710 alot better but its not assisted.

I Would Say Spyderco Para2 Or Military.. But They Aren't Assisted.

I Say Take A Look At:
ZT 0301
Kershaw Rake
Kershaw JYD II - But It's Not Assisted...

Zero Tolerance ZT300:
Assisted opening
Rock solid tough
S30V stainless steel blade with matte-black Tungsten DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating
Includes a quad mounting system for tip-up, tip-down, left- or right-handed clip carry
Blade Length: 3 3/4 in. (9.5cm); Closed Length: 5-1/4 in. (13.3 cm); Overall Length: 8.5 in. (21.59 cm); Weight: 8 oz

thanks guys I'll check those out.

I wish he would like a para 2 thats what I carry as a folder everyday. I love spydies but for some reason he doesnt like them.

Knifecenter is supposed to have a run of HTM Gunhammers in M390. They should assisted open, but you'd have to wait a while and they might cost over $250.

Id be willing to do that. I emailed them and I am waiting on a response. That be an awesome knife. I love the look of the gunhammers. I want one for myself.

If you're willing to go way up in price you could get a Benchmade Subrosa.

I saw the subrosa but it doesnt seem to be that expensive. I was looking at the Benchmade 913D2 Nitrous Stryker. Its d2 and assisted and 3.60 inches. I like the Benchmade 890-111 Torrrent Knife Gold Class but just cant seem to justify that much for a present yet.

I'd get this. Is at your price, blade-length and it's is much tougher than nails. Emerson has produced knives for the Seals and various Special Forces, SAS and other teams for 20 yrs or more. He uses nothing other than 154CM but it can be easily sharpened.
Yes, M390 will hold an edge longer, IMO, but this would be my choice. In fact, I have a "standard-sized" CQC-7 coming in the mail now.
This Emerson has the "wave" (assisted-opening) feature on it, so that it opens as you take it out of your pocket...FASTER than an automatic knife.

Good luck.

I know of some who are very pleased with the Bradely Cutlery Alias and find it to be a fine sub 200 dollar choice for a general use EDC blade with that being said I have no first hand experience with it and can't realy critique or praise it. However I for one can make a personal recommendation for Both the ZT 200 ( which may be a little on the large size ) and the Kershaw JYDII ( still large but IMO a bit more pocket friendly ) with the awesome and innovative Composite blade also there is a realy cool and new Kershaw folder called the Speed Form that comes in the nifty Elmax blade steel which I feel would make a great lighter use/Gents knife and of course it is typical Kershaw quality. All in all you've got a great deal to choose from whithin your price range and it wouldn't hurt to try and see some of these blades first hand and take your time chooing your new blade.

Cool thanks Sonnydaze and Whetrock. I saw the emerson and like it for myself. Ive seen a couple modded ones on here too. But hes not a fan of the tanto. I am but hes not. Ill check out the bradleys in a bit.

You can get a ZT0300 blem and Kershaw Tremor both big beefy knives and still be under your price limit.

Well guys I pulled the trigger last night and went with the Benchmade Torrent 890 with the 154cm blade. Also got my gf a Benchmade Mini Griptilian in pink with 154cm blade. I had got her a spyderco manix 2 sprint in pink with 154cm but man is that sucker big. Too big for her lil hands. So that one is going to stay in the drawer for now. I love the feel of the manix 2 its big and heavier than my para2 in 20cp. Man just take off the pink scales and get some user scales for it. And to think I preordered the para 2 in 204p also. Been a year filled with lots of knives for me so far. Hope he likes it since it is a little smaller than his sog trident. Now comes a question. How do you guys who have Benchmades like them with 154cm? These will be the first. Its obviously a step up from Aus8 correct?

well guys here are some pics of the BM I got for my brother. He likes it alot. Only complaint he had was that the thumb stud wasnt on both sides like his sog trident.

I kind of got a little carried away and bought the gf a pink mini grip since the pink manix2 was too big for her and her pockets. Also got a ambitious from Samilius which she loves. Only request she has is that I get pink scales for the Ambitious if I can. Also got me a lil ladybug 3 in yellow from Gail who I got the Manix 2 from. All in all good week for knives. And everyone is happy.
