okay, here's the deal-
my wife wants to do a bit of training with me; i've gotten my feet wet and have a decent grasp of how to hold the sticks; how to strike; some terminology;...
LOTS of sticks and toys!
anyway, i've got a few books on Arnis- the best one so far seems to be Modern Arnis by Remy Presas (the yellow cover). but some of the angles seem to be redundant or hard to comprehend as far to effectiveness. okay, i like 1-5; 8,9,10, and 12. however, 6,7 and 11 seem a bit hard to actually see being used in a "situation."
so- Question to all you FMAers, (and anyone else with a link, comment, or excerpt from real-life work)- what system (as seen in a book or link, or video) gives the most concise yet practical angles, along with a numbering system to use with them.
Would using the ones i have listed above be enough, especially for my wife and myself just playing with them?
i'm not knocking the book- just trying to get some opinions on what to distill out of it for the two of us. I love the Redondo, the defense drills and siniwali- have done some of them, the first two-- am working on the third one. i'll hopefully be able to go to a once a week class on Arnis while going back to school; that's all i can afford and it's all that's offered locally.
So, how about it? whaddaya think are the basics to work on?
My thanks to all!!

KELT34 ..if you want a simple tape let me know.. My Conceptual stick tape might help you out..yes its Modern Arnis Based..or call George 1-800-340-9664...There's not a redundancy of strikes..1-2 give you downward diagonals..3-4 horizontal, 8-9 give you upward diagonal, 12 downward vertical..
5 is a center thrust..be it stick, knife, front kick, low straight blast..
6&7 are extremely useful and give you hooking lines with and without blade..with a blade VERY deadly as well as passinfg lines..yes you pass with the motions..upward diagonal thrusting..
10 & 11 teach eyes. no vision no sight, use of presentation,..striking is unseen..
6-7-10-11 all teach faking and rotational cutting....
Everyones Abecidario -or numbering teaches something that the instructor sees as important.None are better than others..They all cover the same angles mostly even if the order is different...
email me and I'll upload a couple of chapters from my upcoming book on Arnis to you if you wish...

Bram-
thanks! yes, that's kinda what i was looking for!
gotta save up for it though- whaddaya retail the tape for?
Finishing up my nursing degree while working just part-time at my local V.A. so i'm working on a budget!
Again, thanks!

Check out the article named Angles of Attack and the 10 Strike Sub system on our web site. Please let me know what you think about it, as this is the reason that I wrote it and this is what I was trying to do when I wrote it aiming for simplicity.

You can start with the 5 basic strikes:

1-diagonal forehand(head/collar bone)
2-diagonal backhand(head/collar bone)
3-horizontal forehand(ribs/elbow/hip)
4-horizontal backhand(ribs/elbow/hip)
5-thrust to the abdomen(or groin)

I train in Latosa Escrima which teaches the five angles (Cinco Teros) described by K Williams as the basic angles of attack. If taught right, they cover most of the common attacks, although you shouldn´t forget to train other angles as well. But Cinco Teros in my opinion is a good way for a beginner to learn the basics.
To quote Master John LaCoste (in Dan Inosanto´s "The Filipino Martial Arts"): "You learn first two numbers, you fight any style and beat him".

Chad-
i can't get the link to open up; i'll try again later- definitely interested in those articles!
Kelvin- thanks; those are the ones i'm trying to get my wife to work on first. it's different showing somebody else what you can see easily enough in a mirror yourself!

Chad,
okay, i got into the website now (don't know what i did before).
anyway-
what i'm having a problem with is under the "10 Strike Sub-System"- i'm not sure i'm getting the angles right for the following:
Angles 5 and 6 state a vertical strike; i keep thinking that this should be a horizontal strike at that angle- am i missing something here?
Angles 7 and 8 (not sure about 9 and 10) state a horizontal strike; again, this seems, to me, to sound like it would be a vertical strike? it's as though 5 and 6 are switched around in the (+) position with 7 and 8.
Was there a mix-up in writing these or am i a total doofus here? (i can easily believe the latter!!).
Thanks...

KELT34..email me and I'll give you a REALLY special price...OK..
really..I'll make you smile from one old PA/EMT1 to a nurse....LOL..
don't get hung up on the numbers just watch the angle of motion...
hang in there...

if you already know a numbering system, that should be good enough because there is no such thing as a superior numbering system. probably more impotent is to practice your hits on something so that you (or your wife) will know how the hit feels on something. i prefer straight angle to diagnal when using the stick because the power is pinpoint more. with a knife i like the curve and the diagnal angle because it is herder for the opponent to deal with.

i dont think you need a tape, they will probably just confuse you if you dont have a good teacher to talk to. if someone has showed to you already the basic hits, then put together your own combinations (hitting pattern) and then do them hundreds of times a week so that you can do 3-4 combos in a seconds. this will teach your hands to memorixe the combos and you can do the attackings very quickly without thinking. for defense, i believe any martial artist can give you a good defense against each angle (especially the aikido man who will show you the close to the same thing many eskrimadors will show you). then try it out with your wife against YOUR method of attack. it might take you longer, but i believe you will end up with the same thing (maybe better) as if you train with an eskrima teacher. the tapes will only show you too many defensive or sticks against sticks, which is useless for the street unless the thugs in your town know arnis. most likely you will use your sticks against a unarmed person or a knife or two or three people, so stick to stick for self defense is not very practical.

but if you have the money to travel, if i was you i would contact any eskrimador nearby, and arrange to spent the weekend studying at his place, it would be very valuable expereince.

i am very sorry! i just read your post carefully and i realize that i did not understand your question!

i dont know what is remy 1-12, i know that his brothers ernesto and roberto use the same basic 6 i use:
1-out to in head (all strikes are straight angle)
2-in to out head
3-out to in leg (knee or shin)
4-in to out knee
5-downward (collarbone or top of head or hand or forearm)
6-thrust upward (i aim to the chin only with a stick)

when you practice, only practice whipping your stick back or following through. dont practice leaving the stick out, this is not practical.

also do each strike full power at least 40-50 times each number before moving to the next one.

learn to hit before all those silly drills, it will serve you better.

Sorry, I've been sleeping for the past two weeks and missed all of this. Yes, you are correct with your terminology. 5 and 6 should be horizontal and 7,8,9,10 should be vertical. We'll put a small video on the site next week to make it easier to understand. But remember, it's not a superior angling system or anything, and even though it seems complicated, its supposed to be simple. It's just a method that I tried to put together to show people how to put their own strikes together. Once they understand it, they are supposed to forget it. It's something to see and say, "Oh, OK." and then move on. It's not doctrine or anything.

Thanks for pointing it out.
