I have a spec plus marine combat knife that most of the black coating has come off of with use. Anybody have an idea what I could use to get the rest off? I figure some type of sandpaper would work well. I've never took the coating off of any knife, so I hope someone can share some advice...

ScotchBriteTM pads or the generic equivalent should suffice. I used the green and gray ones on my Nimravus and the finish is actually quite nice, although not a full satin polish by any means. (However, once the black crap is gone one could easily go through a few fine grades of sandpaper and apply such a finish if desired...) I found that using some lubricant like WD40 or oil helped during the final stages.

A dremel tool can be a big help too.

Interesting. I was thinking about using a green pad to remove the black finsih on my Ontario sp1 Marine knife.

I've also used the green Scotch-Brite pads to remove black coatings and bead blast before. It works fine, just make sure you keep the scratch direction the same in all strokes (looks better). It might take a lot longer when removing the black epoxy coatings on Ka-Bars and Ontario's and stuff though. I think those coatings are usually a lot thicker than the thin black teflon coatings on Benchmades and stuff.
