Yep, found a knife in my dad's workshop and decided to clean it up. It seems to be a fair, if not good, knife but somebody has used a file to clean the sides off. I'm not really sure why. It was given to my father but he may have been the one to file it because he used it many years ago as a cable cutting knife. Still, I'd like to fix 'er up but I don't know how to get the file marks off without ruining the tempering or adding worse scarring. Here's a picture of it:

Any help you guys could give me is greatly appreciated.

Hand sanding, get piece of hardwood and some paper 80 grit to start with to remove the file marks 120 grit might be better if the marks don't go away with the 120 back down to the 80 work your way up through the grits until you reach the finish you want.

Rig up a block of wood so you can clamp the knife with the blade flat on a supported surface, cover the handle with a piece of rubber or leather, sand across the blade and then the lenght odf the blade each grit size.

When I get to finer grits I use a softer sanding block leather face or rubber. Wet sand at 400 using soapy water or WD-40
