I've had a Pattern 1907 Bayonet for a while now. I wanna restore it as much as i can. It is pretty beat up, and the blade's tip is messed up. Here are some pics i took of it

Those pics aren't too good, but they give you a good idea of the condition of the knife. I don't plan to do anything too extensive, but what could i do to improve the condition of this weapon? It is originally from WW II. My great grandfather used it for quite a number of years after the war. It's quite obvious he didn't take too much care of it. What can i do to remove most of the rust and dirt off the blade and wood? I would really like to be able to display this next to the USMC KA-BAR I'm buying pretty soon.

Nobody knows what i can do?

I don't think it's that nobody knows what you can do to it. It is generally understood by knife collector types that you don't attempt to(and can't really) RESTORE a collectable knife. Maybe stop the rust with light oil and keep it lubed up so that it doesn't get worse.

I'm surprised you haven't got a reply already like DON"T TOUCH IT

Wilonpill.
Restore or not, depends.

What you want?
A blade( or baionet ) for use, decoration? Or a baionet to keep and mantenance the value comercial or sentimental?

If you just wanna keep the baionet for your sentimental value, you can get a scott brith, detergent, clean the blade, dry, oil, and stop.
sorry about my english..

regards.

I am a nobody but I do have .02 to through out.

I say do as little as possible. By cleaning it, you are taking away the visible history of the knife. Stop the rust, maybe clean off some dirt, but thats about all I would do.

If you want a pretty one, buy it. But your grandfather used that knife and the history of his use shows on it. Leave it there and display it proudly.

Dont Touch It

just use a little oil and leve it at that

I agree with this and the other similar comments made above. You could try 'cleaning' it with some product specially designed for 'restoring' without destroying things like what you've got like this stuff:

I've used this stuff before and have found it good for wood-and-metal objects like old knives and guns. It won't remove bluing or patina but does a good job with legitimate grunge and overt rust. Smells like vanilla and is good on wood finishes.
For something like what you've got, I'd use this stuff before Ren wax.

Ok, so the general consensus is just leave it be. Thanks for the input. I think I'm just going to wipe it down with some water to get all the dust off it. Then would some WD40 work to keep it from rusting any more?

I wouldnt recommend water.

Take some old underwear (lint free, cheap, not to harsh), apply some oil and wipe it down. Dont rub it to hard as you dont really want to wipe away to much. Any dust will come off unless its very thick dust.

If there is visible dirt, looking like it was used to dig a hole, take it off, but other wise just gently wipe it down.

I wouldnt use wd-40. It dont last as long as oil as a protective. It does have good properties in displacing water on a surface, but your not putting water on this.

For the rust, take a cue tip with oil on it and work it some. Your removing the rust scale, then coating it with oil as to stop the air getting to the rust.

I am sure there are some others out there with very good suggestion

Ok, sounds great. Can you suggest any certain brand or type of oil? All i have right now is WD40 and this little bottle of cheap oil.
