I was lucky enough to aquire a single phase 3 horsepower motor from my dad recently to power the sander I built. The only problem is the motor runs in the wrong direction I need it to. I have reversed motors before but this one only has two wires running into it and there are only two wire hookups inside the panel of the motor that I can see. It is made by Century Electric Company of St. Louis MO but I guess they are no longer doing business. Please tell me there is hope for reversing it because it runs flawlessly even though it is probably 20+ years old.

You might've bought Compressor Duty motor.
Some (most) of those run CCW and are not
reversible. Also, they are not designed for
extended runs.

Generally these are priced 20-30% less compared
to continuous duty reversible TEFC-type machinery
motors.

Do you have room to flip the motor end for end it runs the same way but end for end it it will have the pulliy spinning the other way. Try it you will see.

Altenatively when motors are wound they all have coil wires that are joined in the windings. If you take the end of the motor off you may get access to the leads in the end. This is very risky because if you do not repair the damage you do to the thin varnish insulation you will burn it out. I would only take it to a winding shop for that process.

Is there any name plate data? Does it have brushes? Normally you either reverse the field windings or the armature windings to reverse direction. It might be possible depending on the type of motor, but without knowing exactly what it is I don't think you'll be able to reverse it. I suspect it is either and induction type motor or a universal motor (Has burshed).

Motors has burshed? Here I thought "burshed" was Russian cooking?

Sorry, Jim, I just couldn't resist. Yeah, I know, I'm weird. I hope you'll find it a "beet punny", though, too! :D

spell checks on forums would have to be for people with insecurities....;)

I'm glad you weren't offended by my pun, Jim. Thanks. For some silly reason it just struck me as funny when I posted it. :)
