Howdy Folks. Forum noob here, I posted another thread in the custom knife section that kinda went south, so I'm gonna try again:

Sitrep: Former squad mate of mine (he's still in, I got out in late 03') is deploying back to Iraq in late march/April 06. He is a SF/Ranger snake eater type, currently assigned to a task force that hunts down and catches the bad guys. We served in the same squad for a year, and got to know each other real well. In late 03, the Stop-loss ended, and I got out to get married and take a cushy Civvie job, half the squad went to the civilian world as well. We still keep in touch as much as we can, and he needs a good blade to take over there when he goes again. Myself and my 3 civilian buddies are all gonna chip in some cash and buy one for him.

He needs:

1. fixed 6-9" blade
2. Sharp, sturdy, can stand up to abuse and keep on cutting
3. Ability to perform light prying duties and general utility work
4. Sand must not affect it adversely
5. 400$ Maximum Budget

I know absolutely NOTHING about fine custom blades. I Know they can be very expensive, but usually worth it. When I had the occasion to carry a blade with my sidearm and rifle, it was almost always a M9 or M7 type bayonet..it always got the job done for me... but for real combat, they are just not good enough...a trooper from another Task Force actually snapped his bayonet when he went to stab a terrorist and it got lodged in the wooden stock of the Tango's AK..lots of other stories about the bayonets being issued failing all the time, blades wont stay sharp, the snap, etc..blades are being used more often now in clearing houses and bunkers in built up areas when and if the primary weapon fails, and the pistol is either unavailable or too slow to draw and deploy.

So, any recommendations on who to buy from, who has a good rep, good turnaround time, good product etc would be greatly appreciated. My backup plan right now is to look for the best commercial grade Knife that meets these standards and get it for him, but having one made for him would be a whole lot more hooah.

You are right, the m9 bayonet just wont cut it.

Strider would be a good choice, or maybe a swamp rat, folder and multi- tool(if he dosent have them yet) Dont forget a decent sharpening system.

Whatever you decide to purchase, shop around for the best price. Most manufacturers and retailers offer military discounts.

How about the Busse Satin Jack TAC? I absolutely love mine.

It'll laugh at hard use (you mentioned light prying). Is just the right size and is as sharp as a razor.

You can get one right now at their company store. www.bussecompanystore.com in Desert Tan for around 300 (other colors are even less). Get a custom sheath and you're all set.

Don't know about availability right now but I also thought of the Dozier KM 12 (Bowie), 16 and 17. They are also in your budget.

Busse,Strider,Swamp Rat all would be good choices. There are also custom makers here who you should check into.I'm sure the guys will help let ya' know.Sorry about that other thread going south!

Thanks for the help fellas..A former Ranger over here in Georgia has A Busse EU-17 he's willing to part with for around 340$ w/ free sheath..I'm gonna meet him FtF next week and take a look. I'll let ya know what I find out. Sweet Forum BTW, I have learned more about Knives in one day of reading than I have in the past 10 years...

B26 out.

I'm for the Dozier, too. You can find them on the internet at knife dealers sites.Vintage knives,Blade art,Steel Addiction, etc.,Good luck& watch your back!

A Buck/Strider folder like the model 880 and a Buck/Strider fixed blade like the one in this link below that already sold on ebay are good affordable knives.

The folder is debateable though. A good Spyderco lock back would be just as nice and probably less bulk without sacrificing the usefulness of it. Something like a Para Military would suffice nicely.

My son said before to me that for anyone going there he recommended that you take a good multil tool for sure. His saw more use than either his fixed blade or his folder. He spent 14 months there so that is sound advice based on experience. He took a Kershaw BlackOut assisted opener folder and a Cold Steel Recon Scout for his tour there and a SOG mulit tool but I don't know which one. I think it was a compound leverage one as I recall.

I really like that new Trident Oberland 01. That's a gorgeous knife, and looks handy and well-made, too. Another good choice (and w whole lot less money) would be the Ontario RAT-3.

Bravo26,

there's a few fixed blade combat knives here at the house that would be proud to serve overseas.

If your squad mate would be interested in accepting one or two "for the cause," please send me a note:

Sorry, cant recommend a combat knife (i really dont know anything about them) but I just want to wish your friend well in Iraq. I know Canada isnt there but Im sure that many of us hope your soldiers stay safe. Happy hunting and I hope u find the right knife.

Best of luck with your decision.

I am not a soldier. If I were, immediately in mind comes custom stuff, Strider, and Mission Knives.

The Mission MPK TI might be a good choice because it is light for its size and can take the prying you mentioned, the blade being made of Beta titanium (one of the best grades "readily" available for knife blades.)

YES! Busses are the strongest knives around. MUCH BETTER THAN THE OTHERS!
The EU-17 is one heck of a knife too. If you don't want it, please send me his contact information. Thanks.
