I'm having trouble choosing a new pocket knife to carry. I've narrowed it down to three, The bm710hs,bm812hs, or the spyderco wegner. I will be carrying this knife every day,and it may be used for occasional skinning, but mostly just for everyday tasks. All of these knives look good but I have'nt been able to look at these knives first hand and wanted to get the opinion of others. thanks

I'd personally vote for the Wegner, but I'm not a big BM fan personally.

For what it's worth!

I'm going to agree with Brandon and vote for the Wegner. Spyderco is a great company and that is a great knife.

Outside of a dog, a Knife is man's best friend. Inside a dog it is very, very Dark.

Plain edge Wegner is about as sweet as it gets in that price range. A VERY nice knife.

I'll cast my vote for the Wegner. Especially if you'll use it for hunting. This has become my favorite knife for all-around use.

Jeez! Here I thought 'Eye' and I were the only guys banned from the BM forum!

OK, here is my take on the three knives in question. The AFCK doesn't have enough belly (or 'positive included angle' if you prefer) for skinning. The Axis looks like it does, but barely. The Wegner has a lot of belly, and a drop point, both of which would make it good for skinning, and general all around use as well.

I suppose that you have tried both disk, stud and 'hole' knives, and found no difference in your ability to use them. I, for one, am terrible with 'hole' (Spydie) knives, but this is an individual preference.

Since you are going to get your knife dirty, you will probably want to take it apart every now and then. This favors the Wegner, as BM, of course, forbids customers from taking their knives apart.

Looks like the Wegner is your best bet.

Chuck,
Just to make your decision a little more difficult, I'll say that I personally prefer the steel and the locking mechanism on the BM710HS. M2 is a very tough tool steel with above average edge retention characteristics, and the axis lock is rivaled only by the very best frame locks (i.e. Sebenza and Mission MPF), in terms of strength,IMO. For a daily carry general purpose utility folder, I think the 710 is a very good choice. However, if this knife will in fact see a good bit of duty skinning of game, I have to agree with Doc Welch's observation that the 710 blade shape is not particularly conducive to performing this type of task. Good luck.

The limitations, according to the former posts of quality folders seems to be the hunting chores and the "getting the knife dirty" associated therewith. Miught I respectfully suggest getting a quality folder for everyday and something along the lines of a Buck Skinner for those times when you have field dressing and skinning to do.

The Buck Skinner is perfect for most game related tasks, inexpensive, corrosion resistant and handy in size. It's purchase will allow you to pick an "everyday" knife that's better suited for everyday chores.

I happen to like Benchmade, expecially the 800 models but have found their quality control to be hit or miss. Buy from someone who will allow a no hassle return.

I agree with Nimrod, get a different knife for skinning. A fixed blade is best, IMO, because you wont get the stuff that is inside of animals inside of your knife. Although I got a case lockback as a gift(I'm not sure what model) that had an opening handle for just that occasion. It's slick for game chores, wouldn't want to dress anything much larger than a whitetail with it though. It's clip point would not be as good an a drop point or skinning blade though.

Just a vote for the 710HS. I have a 730 and a 705 and both are great. (normally I would have posted earlier, but I was out-of-town, and it wasn't even to the Bladeshow, either

Skinning can get a knife rather filthy so it would seem wise to purchase a straight blade designed specifically for that task as one can generally be cleaned easier.

That being said, I have a BM800bt and a BM710sbt and would personally prefer either over the Wegner due to the blade design and point. I prefer my 710 over my 800 because of its strength and smooth action.

Happy hunting! And let us know what you decide upon.

You could put nacho cheese sauce on it...

Go for the 710. The axis lock is hard to beat. Also take a look at the 720 before you buy anything.

Hey Chuck K,
It was looking like your decision was going to be pretty easy after the first six responses to your question. Now look where you're at. Don't ya just love this place.

OK, just to muddy the water a little more, the Wegner was made as a hunter's knife, BUT the thing is held together by rivets and cannot be easily dis-assembled for cleaning. A great knife though.
The 710 has a decent belly to it and has the best lock, but the edge is thick (on mine) and does not lend itself to fine or delicate cuts very easily.
The 812HS may be your best bet IF and ONLY IF you can get a good one. I've heard from several people that Benchmade's QC is kinda spotty on this model. I have lg. right and left handed 800's and have no problem with either. Go figure...
I agree with the others when they say get a different knife for skinning. A fixed blade.
Good Luck!

Well, I made my decision but it wasn't easy.
I odered the spyderco wegner from best knives and it came in yesterday. It is a beautifull knife and rock solid. The fit and finish is about as good as you could ask for, and I really like the blade shape and profile. The lockup is very positive and the handle shape fits my hand very nicely. The knife was also hair popping sharp out of the box. The bm812hs and the bm710hs both look like great knives, and I wanted a blade with the m2 steel, but I read in some posts that the profile of both benchmades was a little thick. To me, the blade shape and profile are more important than the type of steel.
What advantage is there in a m-2 steel blade with a good heat treat if the blade profile is wrong and won't cut. The other reason I went with the wegner was that I could not find one post that expressed disatisdaction with the wegner, not so for the benchmades.
The reason I wanted a folder for skinning was due to the fact that I go feral hog hunting with dogs in the thick brush of south Texas. I already carry a Ka-bar military knife for stabbing the hog after it is caught by the dogs. Carring two fixed blades is bulky especially when crawling through thick brush. Anyway I needed a knife so I could field dress the animal mainly to reduce its weight. sometimes we have to carry the hog a mile or two back to the truck. The wegner looks like it will do a fine job. Thanks for everyones input and thanks for having a site like bladeforums.
