Need Help Selecting Pocket Knife for Award

A group of which I am a member is going to present a pocket knife to a fellow to show our appreciation for his service to the club. We want it to be nice, but something he can carry with him and use as well. I'm thinking a medium size stockman pattern would fill the role.

Here are some of the specifics:

not too big or heavy for a "regular" (i.e. non-knife knut) to carry
suitable for engraving on the blades and bolsters
less than $50

There are a lot of good looking knives made by Case, Boker, etc. in the $30-40 range that I think would fit the bill. I don't know if I should get carbon steel to make it a better working knife, or stainless to help it retain its "looks" for a long time, especially since the blades will be engraved.

I'm open for suggestions of brand, blade steel, and of course handle type. I'd also like to know some good vendors, as most of the places I frequent online don't have as extensive selection of traditional folders as I'd like.

Hmm .. an SAK might be nice too. I could get some engraving done on the handles, and some on the main blade.

Thanks ahead of time!

Benchmade also does laser engraving on their knives. I had 30 Monochromes engraved as gifts and they came out great.

As much as I hate to suggest this (as a knife nut), I'm going to go with a Case in the stainless.

To a non knife person, Case has name recognition & stainless looks pretty with little maintenance. I know people who think Case is "one of the best brands of knife". They certainly have good shelf appeal.

Give someone who desn't know better a Case and a Queen, or a nice older Kabar and they'll think the Case is the better knife on name alone and not necessarily appreciate the finer details of the other knives.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I really appreciate it.

Right now my first choice is a Victorinox Explorer (plus) with black scales. I think it will show white engraving nicely, and leave a lot more space for it.

Second choice is a Case medium stockman in SS.

I'm still mulling it over, though ...

I'm going to have the engraving done locally, so that's not a problem.

Thanks again!

i wish i could get one as a gift:)

and at least to us east coast guys, they arent seen very often :)

Rhino,

While the SAK is a great choice, it's rather...hmmm...ordinary. You are trying to say thank you to someone that has done alot for your organization. An SAK IMHO seems a little impersonal. They will get alot of use out of it, I'm sure, but if it were me picking something out, I would want it to be something special that would also fit your budget. Maybe something he wouldn't normally pick out for himself, and everytime he used it, he would be reminded that he is thought well of by others.

That being said, is he a knife person? Like others have said, stainless would be a better choice if they don't know how to take care of knives properly.

The Mooremaker seems like a great product, or the boker, or Queen.

Just my opinion, such as it is...

Let us know what you chose.

Good Luck,

Glenn

Thanks for the additional information and feedback since my last "thank you!"

As far as the SAK goes, I see your point and I agree to a point. The main reason I am leaning toward the SAK is because it really lends itself to the engraving and other personalization with the smooth red scales and a nice, fat spear blade. I'm going to be having a name, club name, date, organization (USPSA), and a motto (DVC) all engraved on it. That would be tough on a traditional slip joint.

Either way, it's the thought that counts! ;)

Well, perhaps, but a SAK is still a nice gesture and will probably see lots of use. Maybe even appreciated more? Afterall most non-knifeknuts would probably asppreciate versatility more.
