I have a Delco motor that turns out to be reversible. To reverse it you switch the red wires on the posts on the motor. I'm wondering how I could rig this with a switch or switches. I have one of those steel machines 9" discs that K&G sells and want to use the motor to turn it. Would be nice to have a reversible disc sander.
Thanks up front guys!!
Michael

It's easy as pie Michael. Go to radio shack and get a switch. It will have 3 or 6 screws. The center screw(s) will be the one the red wire goes to . hook one side to one post on the motor, and the other side to the other post.

You can put your master switch in line with the black wire.

Just reread your post, 2 red wires. Same thing just make sure you use the 6 screw switch and swap poles on the off side.

Just like this
Switch

post1r redfrommotor1 redfrommotor1 redfrommotor2 post1
post2r redfrommotor2 redfrommotor2 redfrommotor1 post2

Even easier
Put a male plug on the end of the wire leading to the motor.
Put a Female plug on the wire coming from the controller.
When you want it to reverse Stop the motor, replug with the prongs reversed.
Assuming this is a DC motor.

I'm sure Peter/don would add this :)
some 6 pole switches are two position and some are 3 position
get the 3 position, the center position will be off,
and you won't
need 3 hands and a striker to operate it :D ;) :footinmou :D

Outstanding!
A six pole three position switch!
Blinker, it's an ac motor, 115/220, and I'm going with 115. Don't have an extra 220 outlet in my shop.
Thanks guys!!!

I think I have a diagram in the Shoestring thread.....let's see if I can find it....

Double Pole Double Throw On/Off/On Switch

Hope this helps.

Essentially, you are just crossing the lines from one side of the switch to the other. When you flip the switch, you are switching the polarity of the lines going out to the motor.

Sounds like what I will need. I picked up a 1/2hp motor from a local supplier the other day. 2 speed, flip the switch from hi 1100 rpm to low 850rpm. I thought this would make a good disk grinder. And for $30.00 what the heck

Outstanding!
Got the motor all wired up today and it works great!
Going to the steel place tomorrow to pick up the stock I need to make the base and the table for the sander and I be a happy camper.
I'm going to use a section of 4" by 6" steel tubing for the table base and top it with a piece of laminate to bring it up to the center of the disc. To take care of the 8 degree angle I grind the lock up part of the blade on my liner locks, I'm going to get a chunk of oak and cut it at 8 degrees just thick enough to bring it up to disc center. Then I'll have a dedicated set up for that job instead of having to fiddle with my platent all the time.
Thanks for the help guys!!

I set up a disc in the shop for multiple use (I also do wood work) and I'd like to take Wayne's advice and add a foot switch. Could one of you knowledgeable people advise on what to look for in a foot activated switch? I think I would like it to be on only while my foot is on the switch. I'm open to suggestions!
Any real prefrences on flat or upright?
