I have been sharpening knives for many years and haven't had too many problems.
As I got older and lazier I started using a DMT Aligner. No problems with my knives made of D2, S30V, S35VN, 154CM/ATS-34 etc large and small. I can get them at least shaving sharp.
But my Ontario RAT-3 is kicking my butt!!! I reground the angle with the DMT extra course stone and proceeded to work up to finer grit stones and all I get is a really crappy edge, no burr. I took a Sharpie to the edge and I am cutting the edge with the stones. I applied softer pressure. I even tried playing Barry White music to get the blade in the mood to be sharpened. Nothing.
Any ideas??? BTW, I just KNOW it can't be ME!!!

Here is a technique I use when knives don't seem to be sharpening like I think they should.

I grind a 30 degree back bevel (total angle) and a 40 degree final bevel (total angle)l. That is 15 degrees and 20 degrees on each side respectively. The back bevel is a finer bevel than your final bevel. Your diamond sharpners are very aggressive and after several sharpenings you may need to regrind a back bevel of 30 degrees total. Then sharpening 40 degrees on the bevel gives a nice paper cutting utiltiy edge.

I'm guessing I have to regrind the back bevel of my knife about every ten to twenty sharpenings. Your sharpie will probably cover both bevels so may not be that useful in this case. Just get the back bevel of 30 degrees sharp and then finish with a 40 degree bevel.

Let me know how you make out.

It might be that the steel is too soft, and with diamond stones + pressure could be too much to form a burr, or to keep one up.
