I have had a Glock combat knife for a while now and my problem is, that no matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to get a good edge on it. The factory edge on mine was horrible. Does anyone who has experience with these knives have any tips on sharpening them? I'd like to get it at least as sharp as the factory edge on my Kabar.

If you have a Lansky or similar, try to get the edge bevelled down to to the 17 degree profile. Once you get a burr, it will take some serious effort to get rid of the wire edge as the softness of the steel causes it to flop back and forth. I used the mousepad/sandpaper rig to convex the edge, and then worked it on my Solingen kitchen steel to align, and went back to 600 grit wet/dry paper to lightly strop finish. Took some effort, but I now have a wicked shaving sharp edge on mine. I'm almost hesitant to admit it's the best edge I have on any of my blades. Alot of folks look down on the Glock knife, but it is one tough S.O.B.. If it was all I had when the 'chips were down', I wouldn't be apprehensive at all. I've beat the snot out of mine, and aside from having to repair some tip damage from sticking a rock in a little impromptu throwing session, it has taken it all. My only complaint is I cant figure out how to get the pommel cap off without trashing it or the handle.

Isn't the handle all one piece? Or are you talking about the round raised area on the bottom of the handle?

Correct and correct. It does come off from what I understand, and there is a small hollow in the handle as well as a lanyard attachment on the end of the tang.

I was thinking about getting a Glock, are they any good?
The pics I have seen on the net make them look a bit crude and roughly made.
What did you find?

I own a Glock field knife, and I would have to say that, of the knives that I have, it would probably be the best survival knife out of the bunch.

I'd say it's designed for simplicity and function rather than aesthetics, so in that way it may be a little "crude", but the one I have is solid and certainly not "roughly made".

Granted the edge may not hold as well as some knives, but it resharpens to a "working edge" fairly easily (I'm sure this will offend some readers).

I like the sheath, too, but if you want it to draw/carry quitely, you'll have to pad the opening with some felt or moleskin.

i use a green one as my main carry knife in the field, and mine came razor sharp from the store. when i dulled it, i gave it to my friend with a lansky, and it came back to me sharp as a brand new sog. I mean, it was seriously sharp. like a s&w rescue folder. one of those, if you dont be EXTRA careful with that thing, youll accidentally hurt yourself with it, and wont even know it types of sharp. So it is possible. I can attest to that. Though, that edge he put on it, is still the same edge it has now, (i havent used it since then, as it was the end of the deployment) and just from taking it in and out of the sheath, its not quite as sharp anymore so. I guess it is somewhat of a soft steel.

The glock is extremely rugged. I have basically put it through hell and it came back and is still just as rugged as it was when I first bought it. The ONLY bad thing I have to about it is that the factory edge on mine wasn't all that sharp. (Understatement)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, but I asked my Grandfather and he suggested a file. Well, I tried it and it is now every bit as sharp as any other knife that I own! :)

I love my glock knife. I owned many expensive hunting fixed blades. But I end up always using the glock knife. For the prices there are just to many pros to not use it. Its inexpensive so if I break it I dont care that much. I baton wood with it daily for my fireplace. The finish on the blade is still intact. Its pretty thick stock and hold well in the hand. I love the weight and the bottle opener. I took a file to mine, same as I would sharpen my machetes. got the edge to where I want it then took a stone and a fine stone. Its not perfect, barley shaving sharp but I use the knife so much I don't see a point in having a razor edge on it. Ill just maintain the OK edge I have on it now.

I have one from a few years back with a thick grind that I reground on a belt sander. Today they seem to have thinner grinds that actually sharpen well. I used a Naniwa 2k green brick to finish the last one I sharpened and it turned out razor sharp. I started things off with a belt grinder then finished with a set of waterstones.
