Hey guys,

I have a boker armed forces tanto folder (partially serrated) and i just cant get the tip of it sharp. Its hollow ground, but the actual bevel is one sided (since its serrated).

Im using the spyderco sharpmaker and i can get most of the knife sharp, except for the tip. Any special tactics, for sharpening the tip, particularly tantos with a one sided chisel bevel/hollow grind thing going on?

I do mine on a flat stone, its been the only way that it has worked for me.

P.S. Its not easy

Cut straight into the stone to remove the edge.

Grind the side of the blade with the bevel until you raise a burr on the opposite side.

Give a very light stroke on the back side of the blade and remove the burr. Refine the bevel to create a sharp, burr free edge then finish however you normally do your edges.

EDIT: Knifeknut has good advice with sharpening the two edges separately.

Don't forget to sharpen the two edges separately and to not try and transfer from the main edge to the tip in one stroke. This can result in rounding where the two edges meet.

tanto blades can be hard to sharpen by hand. you could try to clamp the knife down and run your sharpmaker stones over the edge freehand.

All the above, use Japanese water stones or Arkansas hard and soft stone, strop if you want to...G
Take your time with it, learn that steel, and that knife.
