I have an old brenchmade CQC-7 that really needs help. I tried using a friends Lansky kit once and actually think I got the knife duller! The results where unsatisfactory, and the angle was off.
Any suggestions on a product and technique to use?

Sorry for posting here, the sharpening forum gets no traffic. (4 posts in last year...)

Hey cledford!

If Youjust stick with the factory angle and only sharpen the already sharpenside then just strop the flat side on some cardboard, and You should get a shaving edge!
Works for me

kniven's advice is right on. On my chisel ground Raven I use a DMT fine 4" whetstone (the red one) and just sharpen freehand. I get better results holding the whetstone in one hand and the knife in the other, than I do putting the stone flat on a table. Just be careful! You don't need to push hard, especially with the DMT, it really removes metal. Since it is a tanto shape blade, I do it in two stages. I sharpen the long edge in front of the serrations first, then the tip part. Try for a 30 degree angle, and don't sharpen the flat side at all. Just strop the flat afterwards on cardboard, like kniven said.

One of these days, I will put this information on word so I can post it quickly at will.

The advice you have been given is right on. The CQC-7 is about the only knife that I use a regular bench stone on.

One thing that I would add is to use a black Sharpie (felt tip pen) to color the existing edge bevel so you can keep it consistent. If you are interested in keeping the angle of the grinds on the secondary bevel the same as the grinds on the primary bevel, be sure to use the same # of strokes on each section of blade.

Take care and good luck,
Derek
