:grumpy: I own two Emersons: commander and p-sark.
They never seem sharp and when I try to test the
edge by cutting a piece of 20# paper it tears instead
of cut cleanly.

I have tried sharpening with a diamond stick first
and finish with the steal. It doesn't seem to make
any difference in the edge.

Am I useing the wrong test for blade sharpness or
should I just give up ?

Did you try the directions on the Emerson site? If not, try those and if you still don't have luck try asking the guys in the Emerson forum.

Emersons are great knives, you'll be great owning two of them.

For sharpening, why don't you try Norton Indian (fine grit) sharpening stone.

The angle between the edge and the stone should be around 20 degree when sharpening, and don't press too hard on the stone.

A couple of light strokes should bring your knives to razor edge.

The recurve blade on the Commander is a pain. It's very difficult to sharpen the smaller belly of the knife, so I usually use kithcen knife sharpener (the one that has 'X' made of ceramic stone).

If you still have difficulty, send me an email, I'll be more than happy to sharpen the p-sark (not the commander, I hate sharpening recurve blade) for you =)

try using a spyderco sharpmaker, if you can start with diamond stones first to grind it to 20degrees then follow up with medium and fine stones. after that re sharpening is as easy as any other knife
