My Cold Steel Kukri Machete came in the mail today. However, as soon as I took the blade out of its sheath, I discovered that the blade was VERY dull, the blade was not straight (when i ran my fingers down the blade, i felt all sorts of bumps and ridges) , and had a blunt and bent tip. How can I fix all of these issues?

My new Rajah II arrived today pretty dull too but without the additional problems you noted with your Kukri machete. If I received a new knife with all the problems you mention then I would either return it to the seller for replacement or send it into Cold Steel for repair/replacement under warranty. So much for the Cold Steel advertising claim of the sharpest knives in the world. Based on our two knives it is total BS!

In my case, which is probably what you are referring to, my Kukri Machete had a thick black coating on the very dull blade. With the blade fixed, I took a simple bastard file and straightened the edge, taking off the coating and establishing a wide primary bevel. I then progressed onto some semi-course stones I had and finally the Sharpmaker rods and a strop. Now it chops and slices like a champ. Hope that helps!

okay, well, i can tell you how to sharpen your kukri, but i'd recommend you send it back based on what you've reported. If you care about it being up to normal standards, you should get it replaced with a kukri that has a straight blade and tip

if you opt not to go that way, PM me and i'll help you get it sharp

10 inch fine cut mill bastard file. All you'll ever need for machetes and Khukris.

My solution?

A 1x30 belt sander from harbor freight. I think I picked mine up for $30 (combo disk grinder belt sander).

Dings, dents, etc on machete take minutes to fix.

When I first got my CS Magnum Khukri, I hit the edge with a medium diamond stone for a few minutes and it was good to go.

Couple of points.

The machete is a cheap beater tool. The steel is relatively soft (so steeling with a hard metal rod does wonders frequently).

Don't expect the edge on a machete to be knife sharp. Most are delivered with a rough edge. (I have held many many examples from different manufacturers where there was no actual edge apex).

As others have said, these are coated in a rust resistant dip. The edge has it on too.

Also, they are knocked out by the thousands, and sharpened as quickly as possible by a dude in Africa (last video I saw), slapping a quick "working edge"

With mine, I cut a bunch of wood first to see how the factory "edge" would do. Not great, but adequate.

Bigfattyt said it best. I have a several CS machetes and all of them came coated and dull. A file lets you set the bevel and a course stone finishes. Don't take the bevel too far, as fat said, the steel is somewhat soft. Don't worry about getting it real sharp because after a few swings it wont matter.

I have built shelters, cut wood and lots of other tasks with my CS machetes and for around $20-30 they are great. Each one has cut down and cut up many many trees.

Out of all the designs CS sells, the Kukri is my favorite. It does everything! I dig with it, hammer, chop, cut... great survival tool.
