As the title says, I can't seem to get this blade as sharp as I want it. Do I need to back bevel it or what, I'm going crazy!

what are you using to sharpen it with? i have touched up factory thick edges that were fairly sharp and made them slice newspaper like a thin blade.

Richard J is your man! PM him and send it over to him. He'll treat her right, and send her back so happy you'll think it's a whole 'nother sharp!

If you want the edge thinned down then it's not going to be as strong a chopper edge, but it'll still chop, just not Nuclear like normal.

are you working up a good burr? look straight down on the edge and see if you still see a shine from a dull spot. i have fine tuned several brand new busse knives with factory edges to shaving sharp wicked choppers in a few seconds. its not necessary to thin the edges. sometimes a convex edge can help them cut and chop easier.

Just to be clear, I can cut paper fairly easy, just can't shave with it. This blade is driving me nuts

Also thanks for the advice.

email me your phone number and i'll give you a call and see if i can help you figure out what you are doing wrong. in the meantime try stropping the blade and see what happens.

I had the same problem in the past with the sharpmaker. I would be willing to bet that the Busse edge is too obtuse for the preset angles of the Sharpmaker. Alter the angle, use the stones freehand or get an edge pro. A loaded strop wll also work. Of course you could send the knife to someone else too. THe best advice I can give is DO not press hard against the stone. Use far less force than you think could possibly work. You may be surprised
Good luck. SHarpening sure can be frustrating. Just keep at it. You will get the knack

the NMSFNO is a steep convex, so if you are using a sharpmaker you wont even touch the edge for a long time, and until a lot of steel is removed..

I took mine to 400 800, 1000 sandpaper and a strop for 5 minutes and it is shaving sharp, and doing all sorts of damage.

I haven't had to sharpen mine yet, but with other knives I've had good success using the DMT Diafolds freehand.

Sharpening a thick edged AD recently I had some difficulty. I know INFI likes it from behind, but after getting a burr and stropping it away I cut into a ceramic stick. The edge seemed to "POP" after that. Hopefully I did not leave a wire edge on, time will tell.

The short of it - if going from behind - try the front :)

Get a black Sharpie marker, and blacken the entire edge. Then do some strokes on the stone, and look closely at the edge (10x loupe helps) Now you should be able to see exactly where you are removing the steel.

If it is sharp with the grey stones, then you should need only some light strokes with the fine white stone. I used to press too hard with that ceramic stone, until I learned that it could be counter-productive.
