Hi All,
I have been tinkering around with antler and wood for handle material with brass hardware. I recently just decided to try out some new material I see others using, so, I ordered some G10, linen micarta, stainless and nickel hardware (tubing and pin material). The problem, for me, when the package was delivered today, is that it looks like whomever put the order together literally threw everything into the box and nothing is organized, labeled, or even paired together. How can I tell the black G10 vs black linen micarta, or hte nickel vs stainless pin rods? I know this is a dumb post to some, but I don't want to use the wrong material as my $$$ is not unlimited. Thanks for any tips anyone can provide.

PS... forward thinking question - is there are way to tell the different steels from one another (carbon vs stainless vs tool, but not necessarily the sub classes within each catagory).

Thanks and God bless.

I would contact the vendor and ask them to try and explain your order to you. That is the least they could do for sending it to you unorganized.

Also, If you can, you could be post a few pictures. I am sure there are some knife makers who could help you out.

That is not something you have to do every day...
I suggest couple of things:
Stainless steel is harder than nikelsilver: even without heat treat. So it will scratch nikelsilver, nikelsilver will not scratch the steel.
Carbon steel reacts to vinegar or even pop: leave it for some time and check if it darkens
With micarta: sand paper and polishing will allow you to find exact match.
I would try that: I hope it will help.
