Okay so I am having a hard time trying to find exactly what I am looking for. I want a well ventilated daypack 1200-1500 cu. in. with either no hip belt or a removable hip belt. Would also like a mesh side pocket to hold a water bottle. The Osprey 24 would be perfect but it has the damn hip belt. Help me out please.

If you really are against the hip belt, I say get the Osprey 24 and cut if off! I have, and use the 24, and it is a fantastic pack. The ventilation is awesome! I left the hip belt on mine, don't always clip it around me, but I do like having the option. I also like the added pockets on the hip belt. When I don't want the hip belt on, I pull it back around the outside, clip it, and tighten the straps, then tuck the leftover strap and put it into the pockets. It's not fashionable but it works like a charm and doesn't interfere with the rest of the pack.

Every bag I have makes my back sweaty, and you can't avoid it. You're blocking the air circulation with a piece of thick fabric, and even it the bag itself vents, the stuff you put in it doesn't so that would stop air cirrculation also.

Osprey is really the only bag I can think of that vents decently since it physically brings the bag off your back, but it has a larger print on your back.

My camelbaks and maxpedition bags, even with those vent channels, just makes outlines of the channels, and the sweat prints on your shirt.

Have a look at Deuter packs. Most have a mesh back panel away from the pack.

The Futura 22 is the one I have. It has hipstraps, but I never use them, they can be attached behind the back panel out of the way.

Gregory Z is available in various sizes and gives you something to compare to the Osprey. I don't have one, but I have many other Gregory packs with which I am extremely happy.

Just wanted to update this thread. I went to REI today because they have a crazy sale going on. After trying on different packs for what seemed hours I went and bought the Gregory Z 30. All their Gregory packs are on sale. The lowest price I could find online for the Z 30 was $119 and REI had them for $109. With REI's crazy return policy, it was an easy choice. I was disappointed with the Osprey. I did like the AirSpeed system but found the shoulder straps and hip belt to be not as comfortable as some other brands like Gregory or Deuter. For the price Osprey charges for their packs they should put on a patch instead of silk screening their logo. It makes it look cheap.
