I recently inherited this hatchet from my late father in law. Who I believe got it from his father. I have searched Google Images, and only found a handful of images off 1 website, and they only guessed at its model. I wrote to Estwing and asked them, and they were able to confirm it was an Eswing Hatchet from about 1930, but could not confirm a model. I am hoping some of the experts here have seen one before and can shed some light on this seemingly very rare axe.
This picture is not of my axe specifically, but this is the only website I found that has a picture of it. My axe is of much better condition, and has nearly all of its leather handle washers.
I can posts pics of mine if someone has a recommendation on where to upload images to, so I can post links. Seems like I cant directly upload images to this post, only external URL's.
Another questions in general for restoration........ is it unwise to remove any of the original leather handle washers, so I can replace them with all new ones? Or is it worth more to leave anything original intact, and only add needed washers to fill in the gaps. I am thinking I would need to add 2-3 leather washers depending on thickness. And if I am to leave the originals, is there an acceptable way to restore the coating or sealant over the leather handle to make it last longer? Or should I not use this axe any more and keep it preserved in as good a condition as possible because it's rarity?
Thanks in advance for your insight and input.
