My neighbor's kid whom I've known since he's a little kid turned twenty and wants a fixed blade knife.

Problem here in Colorado, the legal length is 3.50 inches.

He could always only carry the knife in the backcountry and not be bound to the 'legal limit' if he says he's hunting/fishing. That's his call.

I recommended to get a fixed blade knife at 3.50 inches max length but the only ones I'm finding are Dozier's blades at two hundred bucks plus sheath.

Becker's Crewman is 5.5 inches and looks like an all around good knife.

Some of the Swamp Rats look good too.

Anyone know of a high quality fixed blade knife, max 3.50 inches, cost approx. fifty bucks to one hundred and twenty five? Carbon steel is fine! The smaller Nimravus would be good too, but cannot find one.

Spyderco Ronin, if there are any around. (Off the top of my head.)
I'll re-post if I think of anything else.

Try the BM 210, in S30V or D2; it's a great blade at the right price. It's a great cutter and can take a beating. Can't think of a better "kids" first fixed blade knife. Been looking at buying my wife one also for hunting. Makes a great small game knife!

BM's NRA and Red Class blades should also be great choices.

The Bark River line has some excellent choices to look at also for some very reasonable to great prices. Your call ...

Hope this helps! :D

The 210 was way too small for me. My initial suggestions would be over 200, so maybe a carbon steel custom? Something basic, maybe a wrapped handle. Probably run ya about 100 including kydex. If you need names email me.

Thanks for all the leads! ;)

The Bark River knives have a convex edge and while I can handle this on my Japanese Wetstones, I'm wondering how the twenty year old would sharpen the knife when he's off in college. Bark River has a very nice selection!

The Ka-Bar Impact Warthog looks very good! Nice blade shape, solid construction, carbon steel, easy to sharpen and maintain. Does anyone know about the cordura sheath that comes with it? It is a decent sheath for the knife?

The Ka-Bar could be the ticket!

theres a Busse Basic 3 in the for sale forum by turnerIII. That would be a perfect knife for you. Be able to pass it down to the next generation. Guaranteed against anything and right around your price mark. Go check it out.
Busse vs Ka-Bar no doubt the Busse is the best.

Have him go to a good will store and buy a used leather belt for $3.00, strop it on that. That's about all I ever have to do to a convex edge to keep it slicing.

All fine recommendations! Appreciate it! ;)

I like the Ontario Rat 3 with D2 tool steel, 3.50 inch blade and what looks like an excellent quality knife.

The twenty year old has got the recommendation(s) and I'll leave it up to him to make the decision based on his visual likes and the recommendations on the blades themselves.

Rat3 or the Game Warden that is popping up on the bussecompanystore right now. you can get em for 187 with tan or black...just gotta keep an eye open for ;) . I like my Rat3 I think its a good blade and the D2 is an excellent choice for it.

Check out the new Spyderco Fred Perrin fixed blade.
3.5 inches, flat ground vg-10.
I don't know when its due to be released though... hopefully soon.

The Rat-3 is an excellent choice!

The Bark River Mountaineer is worth a look as well, beautiful little blade.

Sharpening convex ground knives is easy, a leather strop and sandpaper on an old mouse mat are all you need.
