Here’s the deal,,, I’ve had a ton of Kelly Perfects and I’ve never had a 44 stamped on it. I’ve had 32 and 3 an 4 stamps But I have not seen a 44 I’m thinking it’s double structure there was a mishap somewhere because if you go by the wait measurements it would make no sense it would bring it to a five pounder which it would have a five stamped on it then. I’ve just never seen one and I wonder if anybody else has seen one like this I search the archives of eBay and eBay listings and I could not find nothing on one of those. If anybody’s got any input or insight on what I thinks going on with it let me know. I have tried to upload pictures but I do not understand it LOL

I would really Ike to see the stamp. Hopefully that link from Hickory n Steel will be a good aid.

I bet I know what the 44 stamp is.

In the later years - maybe 60s or 70s - the true temper axes were given a two digit code stamp, almost like a model number or something. These axes often also had the eye ridges in there. I've seen kelly perfect axes with this stamped code, but don't remember if the number was 44.

ok, maybe not - well depending on whether there is more to your 44 stamp.

I found an old thread talking about and showing pictures of those stamps - and most were actually 3 digits and were a letter and two numbers - like A26 or C23, etc.

Here is the thread:

So, I'm guessing that its either one of these stamps - or you have a 4lb head that got an accidental double stamp.

There was never a superscript 4, because that wouldn't make sense. I've seen 3^1, 3^2, and 3^3 stamps, but a 4^4 would be the same thing as 5lbs.
