hello folks i need help with a purchase so what im looking at is either a spyderco lionspy or a spyderco brad shouthard flipper now i love the design of both of these knives but ive heard the lionspy has some fit and finish issues do you think this affects the strength and or life span of the knife i do like the steel insert on the ti lock bar now the flipper im worried about the titanium lock wearing out against the steel i need opinions please help thanks all

ps. sorry for the poor wording and lack of punctuation

For EDC go with the Southard. It is slim and light. The Lionspy will be 3 oz. heavier and the handle is larger, so it may be more confortable if you had lots of cutting to do. I've always like the look of the Lionspy, but I had heard of fit and finish issues, so I really considered getting the Lionsteel SR-1. Instead I got the Southard and now I don't want either of the Lion knives.

I like the Southard, it's a little thinner to which for me anyway would be better for EDC. I think if I was going to buy a Spyderco Lionspy I would just buy a Lionspy but that particular design doesn't grab me. Spyderco's are really well built I wouldn't think you would have a problem with either knife.

ZT 0550, 0560 or even a 0300 should also be on your radar in that price range, the F&F is second to none and there is a carbonized surface on the titanium lock bar to help reduce wear. I am not sure if there is on the Spyderco? Any way all great knives the ZT's are a big (0550 not so much) but if you are looking at a Lionspy I wouldn't think that would be a concern.

I would / did go with the Southard. I have carried it every day since it came in the mail.Th e knive is near perfect. My only very minor gripe with the Southard is the tip of the pocket clip is a little pointy.Unless you like really big folders, get the southard and if you do like big folders get the Military or ZT 0560 .

Which appeals to you most?
Both have a great steel and are tough ti frame locks.
Don't worry about the Ti wearing against the steel.
It's a classic lock design and works well.
As for the steel insert, people feel it adds extra strength.

The Southard is a little smaller and thinner.

There have been a few issues with fit and finish on the Lionspy's however these have been far and few between so I wouldn't worry about it.

The Lionspy is extremely beefy and a little heavy in the pocket.

In my opinion, I like the look of the both knives. I love the way the Lionspy feels in hand and I do like beefy knives(I prefer them a bit smaller though). For an all around knife that could handle anything and take a beating, get the Lionspy. For a more regular EDC type knife, get the Southard.

But say if your job consists of harder use where a beefy knife is best and looking more "friendly" doesn't matter, get the big beast lol. If weight isn't a concern while carrying either at work or home the Lionspy is a good option for that.

However, if you want just an all around EDC knife that can handle your daily tasks, is lighter, good steel, and overall a little more pocketable and more EDC friendly, then get the Southard.

It really depends on what you prefer.

yess i was thinking about just getting the lionsteel sr-1 but for me 400 dollars is to much this is going to be a though choice

how has your lock up been on the southard interms of stickyness and the lock bar moving ive never had a ti frame lock before but reading and hearing some things about them makes me skeptical on the life span of the knife because when spending that much money i want it to last for years and years if the lock was to wear to have up and down play or to have the lock bar disengage is that something spyderco would cover under warranty or is that considered normal wear

very much appreciate you response but now it is harder to choose since you say not to worry about the ti wearing out and the fit and finish issues are far and few between do you know if the lionspy still has the good warranty of spyderco since its produced by lionsteel?
