Hi guys,

I just bought a shirogorov mod 95 with washers from another member. It doesn't flip well at all and I'm disappointed. I just ordered some tuf glide and will try to clean it. Are there any suggestions? These are supposedly great flippers and I'm very new to knives. Any help appreciated.

Could be a weak detente. If that's the case not much you can do but try and get it back to the shirogorov people!

AFAIK, they are only great flippers when on bearings. That's why the washer ones carry a much lower price tag.

Before I bought this, I was told that and read that washer vs bearing there was not a difference in flipping action. I'm pretty bummed out about this

Any flipper depends on two things. A proper detent and low opening friction.

If the action is too tight, it won't flip. If the detent is too weak it won't flip.

Since the detent is decent, you should try cleaning it out and relubricating. If it's an all Ti model with no G10, then it may be worth using some solvent to clean out the old lube and then relubricating with something good. I haven't used Tuff Glide before. Maybe something light like a nano-oil? If cleaning and relubricating doesn't do it, then try adjusting the pivot, but you're going to need special tools for that. I've seen people modify flatheads with files or shape coins to match the slots so they don't damage the screws. If you go at it with a regular screwdriver, you will bung them up.

you can start by using a drop of olive oil. if that doesn't help then polish up your washers or get some powdered graphite. Tuff glide doesn't really work all that well, use nano oil instead. I have both and nano oil works a lot better on my Hati.

dime works perfectly for the pivot screw. you'll need to file down one of your small screw drivers to fit the smaller frame screws.

Before diassembling I would go the WD40, blow out, nano-oil process.

Soak the pivot and action down with WD-40. Blow out everything with compressed air. Try to flip it and if it still needs help do ONE drop of nano oil on each side of the pivot and just a touch on the detent ball.

The action is likely gunked up with dirt or over lubricated.

Very sorry to hear that. I have a few Shirogorovs and the one on washers arguably flips the best (Also have SRBS, MRBS, and DRRBS) However, I have to manually close that one unlike just letting gravity work on the bearing ones.

I'd give Neil at True North Knives a call as he's their North American dealer.

Sometimes lube can just gum up the works with those washers....any chance you can upload a vid on instagram?

I would highly recommend Neil at True North Knives so you could arrange for the makers to take a look at it. Might have it send it to Russia though...

I just talked to Neil, he was extremely nice and said he would do everything he can. If I can't get the seller to take it back, hopefully Neil can get it fixed for me. I'm really upset by this. As soon as I opened the knife yesterday I knew something was wrong, the blade was sticking and would not fully flip. When I took it apart and reassembled it, it would not flip if I tightened the pivot to center the blade. I can't believe this happened. I was so excited about finally getting a Shirogorov.

Yeah...that really sucks. Hopefully the seller steps up...it's very odd to have any flipper stick...

The other thing to be careful of with framelock flippers is that you make sure not to put any pressure on the lockbar when opening the knife. You can also add a little wrist action when you flip to help the blade swing.

really? Mine drops every time. Makes me glad that I still have my thumb nail.

Pitt, really try some lube. I think that's what you'll need. Shirogorovs are hard to fix since they have yet to reply to any of my emails for repairs, so I just took the repairs to my own hands. It's simple enough to fix. How are the washers looking? any dents or bends? have you looked at your detent hole on the blade? is it full of gunk? have you tried to tighten the lockbar insert? that actually affects the flipper more than anything else.

If you've already taken it apart, I don't see any seller refunding you. You have to decide whether you want to keep something before you take tools to it.

At this point, send it to Neil. There's the possibility you assembled incorrectly. I think these use a bushing system so it's possible to pinch a washer like on the sebenzas.

Erg! You took it apart!?!?!

As a mechanical engineer you should know that differences of < 1/10 of a degree can make a world of difference for such a knife construction technique. Your vids show that the pivot screw is too tight...how too tight can vary greatly.

If you hadn't taken it apart the seller should have let you return it....but since you did take it apart I would recommend putting up the cash to have it refurbished by the Shrigorov Bros and chalk it up to experience in the wild west of internet knife buying. Hopefully it won't be much more than $100 USD ($40 for shipping and ~$60 for their time) That's just a guesstimate...or you could try some of the russian forums (guns.ru) or ukranian forums and see if they shirogorov maintenance recommendations.
