Hey guys,

I sent a spyderco sage 4 back to the factory for repair. One of the wooden scales cracked very slightly near the pocket clip attachment point. I fixed it with epoxy and it's barely noticeable but I had to send another Spyderco knife back for repair so I figured I'd just send this one along to see if they could replace the broken wooden scale. Well I got a message back today saying that they cannot fix the Sage 4 so they'd be willing to send it back to me as is, or they'd be willing to credit me $309 so that I can pick up a new knife from the 2016 catalog. So... I don't know what to do. The sage 4 is a great knife and it seems like it has some value as a collectors item considering that it is now discontinued, but there are some really great knives in the 2016 catalog like the Mantra and Sage 2. So what would you do in this situation? I really don't know which way to go so your opinion could really help me out. Thanks!

If you missed the Sage 4 while it was at Spyderco, then I would say keep it. You may never have an opportunity to get it back. There are an infinite number of ways to make $309. If you hardly noticed it was gone then take the cash.

It's $309 credit FROM SPYDERCO DIRECT mind you. You will not be paying "street price" but the MSRP in their catalog.

Also, consider that with the cracked and epoxied wooden scale, the resell value of the Sage 4 will be diminished.

thanks for all the help guys, you've brought up a lot of great points. I guess my big fear here is that I give up the Sage 4 and then it becomes some sort of highly sought after collectors item and 3 years from not I'm kicking myself for not holding on to it.

The only thing that sucks by keeping it is the crack. Even if it is sought after in the future, how much will the re sale price be affected? LOTS!!
Sucky position......but I'd probably send it back and get the credit.

I'd take the credit and get something new. Cracked scales are not for collectors, who are the only folks who would be interested in it down the line...

If you're worried about possible resale value if a used sage4 with a cracked scale, and if you can purchase anything in stock off their site catalog, $309 can get you two discontinued Air Gayle Bradley's in m4, one to use one to store away as a safe queen.

Or a discontinued Centofante memory w/ $100 to spare for a $10 Centofante 3 or ffg delica!

Or use the credit and pay the difference for a $40 firefly or a $50 myrtle cf.

All of will certainly hold value down the road at least on par with if not well over a used sage4 with a cracked. scale.

Seems like a no brainer, I'd be like what sage4?

I say keep the sage 4 since they've been discontinued. You can always have one of the fine craftsmen here make some custom wood (or whatever material) slabs for it if the crack bothers you.

Just gonna say this. Because you fixed it with epoxy I would pay at most $50. It lost value. Take the credit. If you want a sage so bad buy a new spyderco sell it and buy better condition sage

Also, consider that with the cracked and epoxied wooden scale, the resell value of the Sage 4 will be diminished.

A real knife maker that is not in a big O' hurry could more than likely RESTORE it good as new. Then the value would be back up but you are out the big bucks to fix it right. I'd fix it nice and keep it. If you like it a lot.

I would say that if the scale is cracked it loses value as a collectors item. However, if you are planning on using it and like the design, then keep it. I would focus more on the value to you than the value that the knife may be worth later.

Well it might be worth mentioning that I've got a background in wood working so my ability to repair something like a cracked scale is probably better than most peoples. The crack was small and ran with the grain of the iron wood. I masked the area around the crack and used a syringe to carefully inject the epoxy. The fix is ALMOST unnoticeable I can only spot it because I know it was there in the first place.

Thank you all for the great suggestions, strategy9's suggestion about picking up two of the discontinued air Gayle bradley sounds really smart, I hadn't even though about splitting up the $309 to purchase more than one knife. That opens up lots of new options.
