I'm looking to revisit my slipjoint roots, but I've been away from traditional knives for so long I have no idea what's what. I'm interested in picking up a whittler that I can actually use for wood carving, preferably under a hundred bucks, that I'm not going to need to do a lot of work on right out of the box. prefer carbon to stainless, but stainless isn't a dealbreaker. like bone and synthetics more than stag, but since I don't really know what's high quality out there I'm deferring to the judgement of others. please help.

I'm actually carrying a Boker Washboard bone whittler right now. The carbon clip blade sliced through an apple at lunch today .
with ease while the other two are used for general utility. I enjoy this knife and use it often. At times I'll switch to another knife because of the "sickness" associated with this hobby; but, I end up coming back to it.

Good knife for the money IMHO

I have heard good things about the Queen Birdseye Maple Whittler in D-2, available for under $100.00.

I have a Boker Grand Canyon series Whittler in their carbon steel. It takes and holds a great edge. Boker makes quite a few whittlers actually, and Queen if i'm not mistaken has just released a whittler in.. "Aged honey amber stag bone". With their D2 blades, and under 100$ it's hard to beat. I don't know what the fit and finish is on the newly released CRKT pocket classics are, nor what steel they use in the blades, but a whittler with jigged bone scales for under 30$. Well. If you're new to the game, and not sure how much you'll use the knife, it could be a nice entry-level slippie.

Hope this helps, if not, please disregard. :)

Is this something you need right away?

I like the older USA made Schrade 863 whittlers. I have four of them now. They pop up on the bay form time to time and run 40-50 bucks. Carbon steel blades with Delrin handles.

The Camillus (again, USA made) model 72 is similar to the Schrade 863. I have two of those as well. Carbon steel blades on that too.

I got a really good deal on one of my Camillus 72s. There is one on the bay now that has yellow Delrin handles. They usually top out less than 50 on auctions.

thanks for the help, guys. lwt, not something I need right now, but it's something I have the itch for. poking around a ton of sites right now while the mrs. is out at a bridal shower for my nephew, I'm thinking I'll try one of the bokers. that washboard bone is looking good, but so is that candy stripe celluloid. decisions, decisions...

oooooops, that didn't happen right at all. I accidentally ordered one of the queen whittlers in birdseye maple; really hope I like it because I still need to get one of the boker candy stripes. hopefully it'll show up in time for my camping trip next weekend.

My wife never buys that line when I use it. :D

You will enjoy that Queen. The only thing that I have heard about them is they don't come all that sharp from the factory. I don't have a Queen so I can't tell you if that is true or not.

Get the Boker too. You can never have too many whittlers. I am up to seven or eight now.
