Guys,
The Wife has decided that she likes the Alpha Hunter fixed blade and I would love to get her one! Anytime I can buy a Buck for someone I am ALL over it! Will likely be used more as a kitchen knife then anything. Premium steel would be a plus but not a deal breaker. She is very good about taking care of her knives so it won't see the dishwasher.

I tried to talk her into the mini Alpha but had no luck so let's stay with the full sized ones.

I did some searching but am still wondering about steel options that it comes/came in and handle material. Would like natural materials, she liked the black water buffalo horn on the web.

If you have links that would be great. PM them to me if needed so no one gets in trouble for "deal spotting".

Or, if you have something she may like also please let me know that on PM.

I don't have any Alpha's myself so basic advise would be great.

Thanks!

Hi Ohen,

I'm a fan of the Alpha series and have a few of them. Most of mine are 420 and is just fine for most kitchen work and will be a little easer to re sharpen. But, if the little lady wants better steel it's also available in ATS-34, 154CM. I also think you can get S30V from the custom shop.

There have been many special orders and LE's made. So you just need to shop around and see what you can find. If I was going to use a knife for EDKD (Every Day Kitchen Duty) I'd go for a standard wood handle...some of the natural materials are porous and may harbor little critters that can only be observed under a microscope. It's all about choices...and they are all yours to make.

Here are some of the LE's I have for your viewing.

There's a good deal on one on Buck's web specials page if she could live with the cutout in the blade.

I checked their web sale already. I like the one that is there but the cut out in the blade was a show stopper for her.

Will look around on the web.

Great input, thanks!

Hi Ohen,

BSP sells a 154 CPM blade and Cableas sell a S30V blade. However, Their offerings in a big Alpha both have a gut hook....I find that to be interesting enough to make this post in your thread (not trying to deal spot). Most folks don't like a gut hook, I for one prefer not to have one. I wonder how many more of these knives would have sold if folks had an option? Maybe you could sell the gut hook as a safe package opener on her kitchen knife...lol

JB,
Thanks for the leads! I'm with you, not into a gut hook on my blades.

Will bounce it off of her but not sure I'll have any luck with that one.

I used my folder to cut cherry tomatoes the other day. It is 154cm and although it feels nice and sharp right out of the box and slices paper like a scroll saw, It didnt slice as well as I expected. Needs to be sharpened more to be used in the kitchen which was a bit of a surprise to me.

I'm leaning towards whichever handle material she seems to like the best regardless of the steel. I'll keep and eye on it to make sure it stay sharp. Haven't thought about it but it may need to be reprofiled to make it a good kitchen knife.

Worse case, I have a reason to buy another Buck which is always good:D
