Hey guys,
I recently purchased a custom stag 701. It is an older model but is absolutely in AS NEW condition. It has never been used, sharpend, or carried. It hasn't even been lubed (still has the black grinding compound stuck in all the joints).
It came complete with box, custom open top sheath, and paperwork. You can view it on my link below.(sites a little messy now but there's five pics in there somewhere)
Can anyone give me some info on this knife. I'm interested in date, value, (I payed 86.00 for it) rarity, and any other info.
I'm dying to carry this knife, but my wife tells me I shouldn't. What do you guys think?

TIA,
Alex

Once you get it dated Alex, let me know that info and I will look it up in the older catalogs and see what else I can find for you...

Jake,
Thanks for the chart, but there are no symbols on the tang. (Pre-86??)
It has Buck in script form,701, and U.S.A.

Dan,
Thanks for the offer, but I still don't know the date. Maybe you could compare your catalogues with my pics and come up with something close.

Any other collectors have a knife like this?
Any help would be great.

Thanks again,
Alex

Alex,

I can help you out with the date. The tang stamp that is on your knife was used from 1981 until 1984 or possibly 1985. The 701 was first offered in the 1981 catalog. I'm not sure how many were made.

Great! Thanks John.

So I'm assuming this knife is 425MOD?
Did the stag 701 appear in catalogs? It does say custom on the box. Were they made for a special offer (BCC)?
Pretty baffling stuff for just a little pocket knife. :)
But I still haven't got a response on the carry issue. What do you guys think? Light user or shelf queen

Thanks,
Alex

Alex,
You're right about the blade steel being 425M. I know that 701 stags were in later catalogs, but I don't think they were catalog items in the early 80's. My earliest catalog is 84 and the stags don't appear in that one. Your knife predates the BCC, so it wasn't made for the club. You said that the box says custom. Is it a dark brown box with "Buck Custom Knife" in gold on the box cover? If it is, then the stag handles were probably put on the knife in the custom shop. The sheath alone, would not necessarily mean the knife is a custom. As far as using it or making it a shelf queen, I personally would put it up. Then, I would try to find a more recent version to carry.

Hey John, thanks again.
I made a mistake with the box labeling. It's a dark tan box with dark brown lettering.(you can see it on my pics) On both ends of the box it is labeled with gold metallic tape:MODEL #701 STAG.
The back of the sheath is marked 701 CUSTOM.
The sheath itself is really cool. The knife pouch is made by folding the leather across from right to left and attaching it to a narrow block of wood. Neat. I've never seen a sheath like this before. Are they in the catalogs?
Bummer on the carry issue :(

Alex
