Hey guys,

I've been looking around online and have been in search of a good quality misch metal rod.

I enjoyed using the misch metal rods from going gear but have noticed that they have recently changed to a rod that throws sparks easier but doesnt throw globs of molten metal like the old ones.

I would prefer to purchase the "molten glob" throwing type firesteels and was wondering if any of you had a source where I could pick some up.

Cheers

I always order my misch rods from Marshall at Going Gear dot com. He's a member here who goes by storl. I have ordered several blanks and have always been happy with the products and the service.

Same here!

I stick the firesteel blanks into Altoid tin firekits. They get put into all of my backpacks and given away as gifts. The firesteels from Goinggear work great!

Thanks for the reply.

Ill give going gear another go and see if the new rods are up to par with the old ones.

Hmmm. Now that I use better strikers I get great results from the five buck Coughlans. Is the performance level for the dedicated Mich metal rods really that much higher ? How do those rods hold up corrosion wise. Are they stable or do you guys nail paint them to stabilize/stop corrosion ?

Check out firesteel.com and see what you think, I love mine.

I bought mine from them as well. I had 2, but lost one to TSA - it was my own idiocy knowing full well their restrictions i forgot to relocate it to my checked bag so i tossed it prior to inspection. I have gotten through TSA with one prior to that specific incident, but had been traveling internationally and returning to the US was the last leg of a long journey and i just didn't want the additional hassle over a $10 piece of gear.

Anyway, I have what is now called the "Armageddon", but iirc it wasn't named when i bought mine. The 3/8"x4" throws huge globs - even when i'm making a fire outside! Incidentally, there is a huge difference in actual use in the field compared to what you see in the videos conducted in dry, wind-free environs. It hasn't failed me yet from windy, wet snowy situations to the easy, dry climate i currently live in.

I can't comment on the going gear dot com products, but they're very well regarded here and elsewhere.

I store my fire-steel in a length of clear flexible fuel line. As the fire-steel diameter is reduced with use i must replace it with a smaller size chunk of fuel line - and it's currently long overdue for replacement!!!

The Goinggear.com steels used to not behardened as much as now...that made them throw bigger globs. The composition of the mischmetal is still the same, they are just hardened more by the manufacturer.

I had no idea that they changed the composition ... I'm glad I picked up a few when I did :D

Thats the thing though. Im looking for rods that throw huge globs of sparks like the older goinggear ones.
