I need help picking out my first knife. My main use for this knife is for self defense. I jog around 4-5 am in the morning around the city. I need a knife that I can carry that is not too heavy(since i will be running in my gym shorts, not much support ) and small enough that I can use as EDC. The choices I have so far:

spyderco tenacious

spyderco persistence (mas maliit)

boker hyper

Im also open to any suggestions- thank you

try not to wear clothes that say "Rob Me!" Buy some pepper spray. What are the carry laws in your city?

Carry some pepper spray and maybe the persistence. I have 3 of the 4 knives you list and I think the spyderco's open a little faster. You'll want to practice with the pepper spray to get an idea of range and how its effected by wind. Same goes with the knife.

Good luck.

Here's a link to an old thread that deals w/ the same subject.

archieblue makes a good point. It's important to know and comply w/ the laws in your area. In general it's a bad idea to tell a police officer you are carrying a knife for self-defense. There was a recent post about some folks in NYC, I believe, that were arrested for having a box of steak knives they had just purchased. An officer asked them why they had the knives and they said for self-defense, so they were in violation of the law. If they had said they had the knives to cut steak they would have been fine.

I generally carry a knife when I run and where I live it's unlikely it'd ever cause any concern for LEO's, but if asked I'd say I was carrying the knife for general utility use, not SD.

The knives you listed are nice, but I think you'd find them to be too heavy. While I do occasionally carry a older model Spyderco Endura or a Spyderco Pacific Salt at around 3oz I generally prefer a knife around 2oz when running.

My favorites for running are the older Spyderco Delica 3, the Spyderco Salt 1, or the Benchmade 530. All of these knives are around 2 oz or less. The Delica 4 would also be acceptable but it is about 2.5 oz.

if you live in a country where people have guns dont carry a knife for self defense, carry a gun.

if you live in such a dangerous area that you need self defense to go jogging get a gym membership or a treadmill.

there are certain knives made for certain situation where people really need something and cant carry a gun or pepper spray or an asp baton or w/ever. the spyderco civilian and matriarch come to mind, as do karambits.

for self defense you want either a gun or somthing to cuase extreme pain.
knives make horrible self defense weapons.
why? I have heard tons of stories of people being stabbed and not even noticing, and if your attacker doesnt even feel it how will that stop them?
I reccomend a tazer or some inferno pepper spray from cold steel, that is if you cant carry a gun for whatever reason.
just a few days ago there was an article about a woman who was mugged and her attacker sunk a 6in blade into her neck and beat her. she went to the hospital thinking she had broken ribs not even noticing the knife sticking out of her back.
knives cuase damage and minimal pain and in untrained hands are useless as a self defense weapon.

tuba74 welcome to the best knife info anywhere. 1st thanks to cqmblade for the great pics. pepper spray is probably your best choice i've had to use it on several occasions & it never failed. if you really want to carry a knife pay heed to comments made by Theamazingdrew. now if you are going with the blade either the spyderco endura or the benchmade auto since both are going to be relatively hidden. when i jogged i clipped knife to my jock strap since it was better supported & hidden.if you have to use a knife train at home doing a slash on the forehead. bleeds like crazy & gives option for escape or terminal action is ensured.

in untrained hands (knives) are useless as a self defense weapon.

Everyone has an opinion and you are entitled to yours. But it is just your opinion, even with "tons of stories". Given my preference when the SHTF, would I rather have my SA 1911 than my Spyderco Endura? You bet. But if a good knife is all that's available, I would not feel unarmed. The intimidation factor alone is worth something.

You might consider learning a martial art instead of wasting money on a weapon to make yourself feel safe - if you don't know how to take care of yourself, a knife or a baton or something probably isn't going to help you. Maybe it will make you feel safe, like Coyote3855 mentioned, but are you really looking for a glorified security blanket?
