Hi all. I am wondering what info anyone can tell me about a certain lockback folding knife. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the knife, but here are the details:

- Common lockback folding knife
- Black painted metallic feeling handle, with a couple rivets joining it together
- "Solingen" written on blade
- Drop point blade around 2 3/4 long (from memory)
- Red plastic spacer located at bottom of handle
- Sold locally for around AU$40

If anyone is able to identify the knife, what information can you give me on it? I think they have been around for a while, I know my father has carried one for years and I'm interested to hear if there is a story behind them or not.

I am assuming it’s German in origin ("Solingen") , Do you have any picks..

Right up to the "red spacer" part you had me thinking Mercator.

Does it look anything like that? Maybe a variation-they make some other knives. The do say "Solingen" in the blades.

Mongrel, that is the knife! Except on the ones I've seen it doesn't have anything written on the handle. Mercator, yes, that is the knife.

Does anyone know anything about these Mercator knives?

I know they've been around next to forever. I've had mine for about thirty years. I think I gave about ten bucks for it when I bought it new. Mine is carbon steel and holds an edge pretty well. It's a good, inexpensive work knife.

They are still currently sold.
