I am making a lockback folder. The scales are of ironwood with no bolsters. Can I make this a linerless knife without sacrificing strength? Will the ironwood be ok if made linerless? I have made linerless lockbacks before, but with G-10 or Aluminum scales.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

One thing I would worry about is having the wooden scales directly against the moving parts of the the knife. It may be strong enough at first, but I think you would develop play over time in the blade and lock bar.Iron wood is pretty hard but I still think over time as the knife is used it would wear around the moving parts. If you try it, you might rub beeswax on the insides of the scales to lubricate them some.
Good Luck.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

Iron wood is fine grained enough to hold machine screws as well. I saw a test a while back on the screw holding capabilities of hardwoods that compared pull out resistance of tapped hardwood with metal nuts, the results were incredible. The wood was within 10% in many cases if the wood was fine grained hardwood.

I tried it with maple and twisted the heads off a couple of #4 machine screws without stripping the hole in 1/8" stock.

After reading Matts reply then Georges......
I must say I just sitting here going, HMMMMMMMMMMM!
I thought about doing a liner lock (very non tactical) with only one scale for the lock side. I have so much scrap stabilized wood collected, The frame would be made of that.
With no locking bar and a pivot bushing there would be no blade to frame wear.
I don't know about the lock back. I never worked with iron wood though........
HMMMMMMMMMM,

Barry, couldn't you use some of those super thin teflon washers between the blade and the iron wood?

L6,
Thanks! I never thought of that. Might have to try it one day. For now, I am making this folder with liners.

Thanks everyone for the help.
