I got to use a fairly good axe this weekend . Still it had a plasticky handle . It was proabably some kind of fibreglass . It seemed to fit into the axe head in the usual manner though the top was filled with some kind of resin or epoxy so it was hard to see . There seemed to be some kind of cheap thin shim/wedge in the back of the eye as opposed to in the middle of the eye as in a wood handle.
The handle was a little loose in the head . In truth the handle was too soft . You couldn,t even stamp the handle down to reseat the head . The middle of the handle would bow just enough to not transfer enough of the energy to the head . The afore mentioned shim may have worked itself up and a little loose . I do not think this is the main problem . It is the softness of the material itself .
If the axe got stuck in a block of wood it was hard to lift it out without seeing the handle twist/shift down a little in the head .
How can I reseat this handle in the head ? At the moment it is only down about 1/8th of an inch . It should not really have any play at all though I think you could get away with a little more with a wood handle . At least you can reseat it easier .
