I have an ancient Cincinnati Royal drill press, and I want to change the bearings and/or shaft and/or chuck. I haven't been able to get the chuck off. Does anyone know how it comes off? I can't remember if it has a tapered spindle, of if it screws on.

Also, does any one know where to get parts for old machines like this? I'm going to call around town tuesday and see if I can find a place, but if anyone already knows, please chime in.

Here's a pic of the business end:

Thanks!

It might be a MT-2, JT33 taper or something like that. That setscrew on the side makes me wonder though. Is it a setscrew?

I'm not sure what the screw is for. I took it off, and there's bearing balls underneath it. Maybe the hole is for oiling it?

Try milling something with it :D if its a taper it'll fall :)

Hmm. That sounds dangerous. :) Actually, years ago I did do some milling with it, and it didn't fall off.

it might fall... I have been using my drill press as a redneck mill for a while and the chuck has not fallen out, and it is a JT33 taper.

I believe that means it's a 1 1/16" locking collar with 20 tpi.

I think you're right. It would appear that I need to turn the locking ring down against the chuck body to remove it. I've tried this already. I'm thinking it may be stuck on. I'll try heating it up with a torch to loosen it.

Thanks! I found it on the US patent office site, but I like Google's better. :)

I tried the torch method, and it worked like a charm. I now have the whole thing disassembled, and the bearings taken off. After I clean them up, I'll try to find some replacements. They're very.... unsmooth. I'd like to replace the shaft and chuck. Does anyone know where to get replacements?

Gald you got your situation figured out. I need to replace the bearings in mine from all the redneck milling I have done. It sounds like a blender with ice in it these days.
