Hey all..... Today I received my first Rob Simonich knife. It is the Urban Raven Fixed Blade. This knife looks like the one on there site except I was told by Christine that this is a "special" version.....

There was a total of only 40 of these knives that was started by Rob before the incedent. He started them & sharpened the blade & then the people at Strider knives finished the false edge & the handle. She also said that the finish on the blade is a little different than others.....more of an ash like color. I was told that they had sharpened the false edge, but it isn't sharp at all....maybe they narrowed the edge down, but it isn't sharp. Also on the "ear" at the spine where it meets the handle, there is a "W" on there which designates "work in progress". A card was attached to the handle that reads "W= work in progress. Started by Rob Simonich, finished by Strider."

My question to you all........seeing that there were only 40 of these done by Rob, & that the Strider people finished it for Christine.......is this going to be some kind of a collectors knife? Should I put it away or no? Christine said that Rob made the knives to be used & he hated for someone to spend all that money to just have it sit around......so what do I do?

This is my first knife from them & I like it, but maybe I should just purchase another one for use or   .

Thank you all in advance. I do appreciate all of everybody's help :)

Yeah, I would like to use it, but it didn't come really sharp.....nothing like what Benchmade does......more so like what Masters Of Defense does :(

Don't know if I should get silly & sharpen it up or like I said, just leave it alone.

Decisions, decisions.......what to do.......

All I know is that Rob made the knives to be used. He could have designed a lot better wallhangers, and although he isn't with us anymore, I'm sure he'd want the remaining blades that he crafted to be used as they were intended to be used. Use it, don't abuse it. Just take good care of it, I'm sure you'll have enough discretion to not seriously damage it.

I'm starting to think that I "should" just use it.

This i to me is just silly to ask what I did......but I just need reassurance.

I have my good knives & then the knives I couldn't give 2 sh*ts for. Those I will abuse to the point where I destroy them. There usually the cheapy knives. I NEVER abuse any of my good knives....you spend all that $$$$, you want it to last.

Thank you GarageBoy & NeedleRemorse for your responses. :)

I guess, on the other hand, (sorry to be indecisive), if you have enough other blades that you'll get by and you don't want to hang onto it forever and you'd rather sell it in the future, you could always leave it alone and put it for sale later. Anything with any sentimental value would be hard for me to sell though, so I'd use it.

I have several full custom Simonichs and like Christine said, Rob designed them to be used. If left in a drawer it won't mean as much, but if used you'll be reminded of Rob and the excellent job he did on the knife every time you pick it up. My Simonich Pikuni brings a smile to my face every time I pull it out of my neck sheath and I can't think of a single "safe queen" that gives me the same feeling.

O.K, I will go ahead & use it.

But shouldn't it come sharp from the factory or do all the Simonich knives come from the factory like that?????

I'm just not that greatest @ sharpening. I have the Spyderco Triangle set & maybe I should give it another try........

Thank you all!

Well, not every knife comes sharp out of the box. Benchmade and Spyderco even let a few duller knives out, though I can't say whether or not Simonich knives are supposed to be scary sharp out of box.

Anyone else with their 2 cents on this?

Is the Spyderco Triangle set a good way to sharpen this knife or should I get something else to do it better?

Should I hold it in any preticular angle?

Thank you all!

sounds like a strider question too me. if they sent it out dull...maybe they will have good news for you when you ask y? or at least some info to help u get sharp ;)

Well, I just got a response from Christine & she is suprised to hear what I found. She said she lQQked at a bunch of the knives & they were all razor sharp. Guess mine made it through the cracks ;)

She said I can return it to her for a replacement or to be resharpened. I am definately going to have it resharpened. I already have a good polish going on it from the Mothers polish I picked up & tryiing to get another new knife to where mine is, is going to take alot of extra effort. My hands can't take much more of that......damn carpel tunnel........can't do anything for any extended period of time with the polishing.....my hands go numb :(

Oh well.......looks like it's taking a trip back to her for improvements.

Thank you all for the help. You all really make it great to come to the forum for advise.

HEY, since it's making a round trip just have Christine put a spare in the box for you.
I know how you feel. I just last week bought a midtech Raven Combat tanto, camo coated. It looks almost too good to use. But when the time comes I am going to use it. As for now I will enjoy it. I was probably as happy unwrapping this knife as any knife i own, customs included. It looks and feels perfect. Rob really has left a fine mark.
