Looking for some help with my Scrapyard Regulator knife. The following thread has a good picture - thanks Jamn.

The blade stock is a third of an inch think. While this makes for a particularly robust knife, the edge bevel near the tip is quite obtuse. So, the cutting edge, from the tip to down for about an inch and half, is almost non functional.

I spent a few hours with my DMT hones, but there is just too much metal near the tip to allow for a reasonable cutting edge.

While the rest of the edge further down towards the handle can mow arm hair, the edge near the tip, cannot even slice thick paper - it is butter knife blunt.

This is a great knife with one of the most comfortable handles I have ever seen and near perfect balance. The steel is super tough as well. I am hoping for suggestions from the those familiar with this knife on how to fix this.

My sense is that the tip needs to be reprofiled/ground thinner to allow for a more acute bevel. I do not have access to power tools. I know there is a lot of talent in this forum. For instance, richard j did a fantastic convex sharpening of my Kukri couple of years ago. Any recommendations about members in the forum who could reprofile the tip would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

My choices would Norcalblacktail for convex, I don't know if want to go that route though or stick with a v edge.

I know what you mean about scrapyard thick bevels... Here's one I did on my DMTs a little while back and it took four hours freehand.

If you're patient, and work the tip, you'll get it down. Honestly I'd probably just do it for you for free but work has me bogged down and I barely have time to take care of my own stuff lately.

It looks like a limited edition Son of Dogfather you are holding. That benefits from a full flat grind and broader tip allowing for a more acute grind. My Regulator has a spike-like narrow tip combined with saber grind, giving me less room to maneuver for putting the acute bevel.

However, that's exactly the edge bevel I was visualizing in order to get this beast functional. Thanks for the picture and hats off on putting that free hand with the DMT hones! I know the skill and effort required for that. I'll give it a another try with the hones and see what I can do.

And you are right, I want to stick with the v-edge for now. I find convex edges difficult to maintain without access to the belt sander or sand paper paraphernalia.

I'm currently reprofiling the tip of my BWM because it has the same issue. I'm using 220 grit sandpaper over my leather strop. Its working but I'm 2 hours in and nowhere near done. Good luck.

why not go with richard j again? he seems to do an awesome job from all accounts and he is still around offering his amazing services. the only reason why I dont go with him is that he turned me on to paper wheels and I do all my own stuff now (probally not as well as he does but good enuf for me to say its acceptable. I can wittle hair into 3-4 layers thick usually, his edges can probally kick the ones I do asses).

I heeded to 230grains and went to work on the tip last night. Used DMT coarse (blue) and fine (red). Given that this is essentially 52100 ball bearing steel, it took over 60 slow passes on each size, per grit, to reprofile the edge. Later finished it off with Chromium Oxide paste on a strop. It is now razor sharp - and I am happy. Below is a cell phone picture - not sure if it is embedded right, but the link should work.

richard j - good to see you are around and kicking ass with sharpening as usual. I am sure this would have been a lot easier with the wheels and the results would have been better. But I got this one for now.

monk3fist - few years ago, I gave up on a HI kukri after mucking around with sand paper and mouse pad. Couldn't use the hones because it was a convex edge. richard j then put such a mean edge on it that it still pops hair after seeing much use. I think he used a belt sander and stropped it down with his wheels.

send me an email. i have a few pictures to send you and a few vids of k II beating the crap out of a piece of ash log and still push cutting newspaper. (and its a chisel grind :D)
