Hey guys, I'm pretty sick of having edges that shave but aren't as sharp as I'd like. I am very interested in buy some paper wheels and a bench grinder.

I know how to keep a steady hand and angle on a grinder and belt as I was the main sharpening guy in shop.

What I need to know is Which wheels should I go for? Reasonably priced please. Also, I do not have a grinder and don't need a very fancy one. Please post one that is inexpensive but works for the job.

Any resident paper wheel guru's, Please chime in.

EDIT: just remembered, for the honing wheel which buffing compound is best? I've heard Jewellers Rouge because it is the finest. If that is not the case I have the whole spectrum of compounds. Also, how is the learning curve with these things? EDIT AGAIN: i was looking at this grizzly grinder, it seems perfect for the job iI need to do anyone have experience with it? Extremely inexpensive as well http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G9717...ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1251877586&sr=1-1

Thanks guys.

Thanks for the link. Informative buut i couldn't find some of the other things I was looking for such as which brand wheels and where to order from and which grinder. So if you have a link where i can order some high quality wheels that'd be nice.

If you have a local Woodcrafter store, they have them there, it's where I bought mine. Amazon.com also carries them as well as Grizzly (Google). They are called Razor Sharp Sharpening paper wheels.
I use a 6" Delta bench grinder, turns at 3450 rpm as per instructions with the wheels.
If you take the time to research the threads on here re paper wheels sharpening, I can't imagine any question you can think of going unanswered.

The answers to just about every possible question you could have is in the link knifenut gave you. Take the time to read the entire thread. If you still have questions, I'd ask them there!

Thanks guys, I did have time to read through the whole thread.. It was at 4 in the morning though so forgive me :p I thought amazon didn't have them but I used some different words and what do you know, they do.

Richard, When i get my wheels and grinder, I may just take you up on that.

And sorry about the profile, I've been lurking here for a very long time.

make sure they say razor sharp edgemaking system on the sticker. they are guaranteed for life. i have a cheap set and they suck. they can have a heavy spot which will shake and vibrate even though they are perfectly round.

10-4. I'll make sure they're the right ones. By the way, did you check out that grinder? It looks like it'd perform fine with the 8" wheels.

that will work but i like a motor that runs at 1725 rpm. thats all i have ever ran my wheels on. if i run them on my high speed buffer i slow it way down. i found out quick not to have both wheels on at the same time. the buffing wheel will put burn marks on your elbow really quick and the abrasive wheel doesnt feel too good either.

Hah yeah, I've had little pieces of elbow ground off by a couple belt sanders before :p not too fun, like 3rd degree rug burn.
