Need help with screw/hardware finish....

Guys,
I need a 6-32 x 1/4" button head torx screw in black.
Now, I am specifically referring to the "black" screws that Strider uses in some of their folders. More recent models have black screws.
Anyhow, does anyone know what finish this is? I know one thing, and that is that the Strider black screws hold their finish a LOT longer than the Emersons do. I always thought Emersons were "black oxide", and that is why I had a tendency to think that the Strider screws were a different finish, but I don't know for sure.
Does anyone know what the finish is? If I find the same size screw from an industrial supply house in "black oxide" finish, will this finish hold up pretty good? (at least not rub off in a couple days use like the Emersons?)
I am only familiar with ONE term for this finish, and that is "black oxide". Thanks for any help....

Havent' tried it yet, but if you have an electro etch you may be able to blacken the heads that way. I was thinking of trying it by clamping the threaded part in the aligator grip and saturating the pad on the carbon block and press the screw head into the pad and see what happens.

I don't think it would be very durable, but maybe someone out there knows?

how about a gun phosphate coating? where you boil the parts in the phosphate to give them a matte black finish. I did a pistol slide and frame like that once and really liked it. :D

Sounds like it's worth a try, IF your guns finish ended up being quite durable.
I would like some more info on how to do this, and where to get everything needed. Do I just go to a gunsmith supply and ask for a "gun phosphate" coating kit?

i got mine at a gun show (less than $10 if i remember right), the instructions came with it, but basically it was clean and then boil the part you wanted phosphate coated in the solution for about 10 minutes in a stainless steel pot, take out and cool, then oil. it gave a matte finish, if you wanted it smoother, just usee 0000 steel wool, i liked the matte finish (non-shiny) and have carried that pistol in all kinds of places and conditions, it still looks as it did the day i did it, that was about 10 years ago, i cant even see any scratches or wear spots or rust anywhere on it.

Has anybody tried it for a blade coating? I was looking into TiN coating blades, but the lowest heat used is 500-550 deg. F.

I'll have to check Brownell's out, sounds interesting

I once saw a kit to do what your looking for in a high end auto restoration catolog. I can't remember the name of the company though. It allowed tou to blacken things like the control arms and screws to look like the original factory finish. I don't think it was very expensive.
