Need help with stockman choice

I am looking for a traditional style slip-joint for EDC. I like the large stockman patterns in particular. I have a budget of around $30-40 but could go over that if neccesary. I want a good user blade steel like carbon or D2 (hate queens factory edges though). I would like it to be nice to look at, but still be able to handle medium chores. I was looking at Boker and Hen and Rooster, but it only says it has Soligen Steel (no clue as to what it is except it was made in Germany), it is any good to use, or is it for show like Case's Tru Sharp? Any help would be appreciated (pics and/or links are helpful also).

While I am not a big Case fan (if they made wood scales with CV steel I would be, hint hint to any Case employees reading here), I would say go for a Queen stockman or cattleman. If you want to send it to a local maker, or BRKT for example, to reprofile the edge etc. Depending on that cost, which I think would be worth it, you can get a good knife and improve upon it. However, Case CV usually comes pretty sharp out of the box, Trusharp Case does not.

BJE,

Eye Brand/Jim Bowie as well as Moore Maker also have some delrin, carbon steel stockmans (stockmen?) in your price range.

As Blues says:

...available from several dealers online at a variety of discounted prices.

Case and Eye Brand would be my recommendations.

Or, if you can still pick up a Camillus-made MooreMaker, grab one. Those won't be around much longer.

Some carbon steel blades:

First column:

#2 down Case with CV
#3 down Case with CV
#4 down Eye Brand large stockman (forged carbon steel)
#5 down Mooremaker (Queen made)
#6 down Mooremaker (Camillus made)

Second column:

#2 down Cold Steel with Carbon V
#4 down Schrade 8OT
#10 down Eye Brand small stockman

Eye Brand (aka Carl Schlieper German Eye) Model 350 or 425 or Boker.

Or a Schatt & Morgan with ATS-34 blades - not carbon but great stainless, and really beautifully made.
(BTW, you might not find the Schatt & Morgan listed as a "Stockman" - it would probably be some variant such as a "Reverse Gunstock".)

Anyway, happy hunting.

In my photo, first column, fifth knife down is a S&M with ATS-34. That's pretty far out of your budget though (over $100).

I'd go with a large Eye Brand if you can swing it. Great knives that take and keep an edge. Still, they'll run you $60 to $80, depending on where you find them.

Your best bet might be the Case in Chrome Vanadium as far as price range.

Thanks for the info, and keep it coming. I definately can't spend an extra $100 right now, but maybe a later purchase. I like the look of that Cold Steel, are they pretty good for the money, also do they still make a large 4" stockman, I could only find 3 1/2? I really like the design of the Old Timer Senior Ranchers, but they are hard to find at good prices anymore and they are not very rust resistant. How good is the steel in the Bokers and Hen and Roosters?

Camillus made Cold Steels Carbon V slippies, before Camillus went out of business, Cold Steel was phasing those out. Good knife if you can find one too. I wish I wouldn't have gotten rid of my smaller stockman.

Yes, those Cold Steel slippies were very nice.

And yes, you'd be happy, I'm sure, with a CV steel Case knife.

Yes Blues, that may be true...but wouldn't a Case CV Stockman in something like chestnut bone be ideal and in the $30-40 price range?

:D :p :D

Now that you mention it... :p ;)

Heres's a few of my Bulldog Large Stockmen, these are the 4 1/4 inch versions with celluloid scales. I catch them on Ebay once in awhile for around $40.00 shipped.

They're very overbuilt and carbon steel too.

No carbon steeled blade is going to be very rust resistance. Learn to love patina! :p

I haven't looked for a Cold Steel large stockman for a while. Seems like I got that one on eBay. Camillus made these knives for Cold Steel, so with the demise of Camillus, I expect they're drying up. Still, you never know what'll pop up. Only real downside to it is the cheap looking plastic handle. Still... great steel.

$40 shipped on those Bulldogs is a great price.
