My nephew has requested a fixed blade survival knife as a Christmas gift. He is visiting my sister so I have a few days to get one. I do not know that much about knifes much less survival knifes. I've tried to do some research, but it seems to be overwhelming information. I don't have a huge budget. Maybe up to $50 so I know that will not buy a top of the line knife. So what should I look for with this budget? Any recommendations? If its a good value I may be willing to spend more. Maybe up to $75.

Are there any features I should look at and or avoid?

The $50 is rather limiting. I would look at the Schrade line in 1095 steel. I would get one with about a 6" blade. You know your nephew, age and so forth.... http://www.knifeworks.com/shradefixedblades.aspx These will work and choose the one that strikes your fancy along the top row. My survival knife is often a Victorinox swiss army knife as I don't do much surviving in the woods.

How old is the nephew? Is this for genuine surviving out in the woods, or more for survival fantasy type of a thing?

17 years old. Not sure about the purpose, but I did ask him if he preferred form or function, and he said function. He said a 4-6" blade. Trying to get some more information from him too.

Get a glock field knife iv just got my second one tough as nails and also has that glock cool factor plus rrp is really cheap for the quality

Ditto on the Schrade line. Some excellent budget priced knives.

Also check some of the Ontario Spec Plus stuff. American made and priced right.

On a budget, a Mora is the best 'survival knife' one can buy.

Increase your budget to $90 or so, and you can get an ESEE-3, the cheapest uncompromised survival knife I can think of.

Right on budget at 49.95 with Buck's wonderful 420hc and a great looking knife. It also comes with a pretty decent sheath, a ferro rod for fire starting and an all important whistle.

I also recommend the Schrade knives, I have a couple and like them. I heard good things about the Gerber Strongarm at $50. I don't have any of these but I am looking for a similar knife and these interest me, Cold steel SRK, KA-BAR BK16, Steel Will Cager 1410 all at $75.

Schrade schf42d is now on sale on amazon, $45
In time he can change the scales as he likes with extra $ - he can make it "new" when he had enough with the knife.

It was $32 about a week ago. I almost got one but I am holding out for something better.

All of the above are great but if I were 17 and got a Buck Selkirk I would do a happy dance!!!! And right in budget to !👍🏻
