I am working on a scan for this, but thought I would ask.

This knife I picked up today at the show on a trade is marked, "Balisong", Japan(on one side) and the other side is marked "Samson" with the picture of a Lion. It is a fixed blade with what appears micarta handles(white/ivory color) with a lanyard hole. I also had one with a black handle today with same markings except it said "Pacific Cutlery" on it, but I sold it. The blade looks like the Benchmade Butterfly knife.

I am curious about what it is/was and about what collector value may be on it.

I will get a pic up soon.

Thanks for trying to help.

I have heard and seen of some fixed blades made by Jodie Samson, with his Lion mark, and sometimes they go for several hundred dollars, but from what I've seen, they are not as sought after than his Pacific Cutlery custom balisongs. They usually fetch for more than twice what I've ever seen a fixed blade go for.

Many would consider him a Master Grindsmith, in addition to a Master knifemaker.

Ok, here is a scan of both sides with the Balisong logo & the lion.

It also has a leather sheath as well with it. No apparent markings or logos as I can tell.

Forgive my igonorance, but it may be ivory or bone.......er.......I did not say what I paid.....after looking more closer at it, it may appear to be ivory or bone.....I have a buddy that may help me identify the material.
Rest assured, it is/will be for sale tho

There was a recent for sale post where someone was offering a very similar knife by Samson. I think it was a custom Samson, not PCC. No sheath. $200.00

So, with the Balisong logo on this one, does this mean it could be a Benchmade or a Pacific Cutlery Model? It niether says Benchmade nor Pacific Cutlery, however, the other one I saw today, did have Pacific Cutlery and looked identical to this one with the exception of a black handle?

This is the original Balisong company's first fixed blade knife. It is a factory copy of Jody Samson's 'Weehwak Urban Self Defense Knife'. This is where the balisong weehawk blade design came from. They came out around 1984-85. They were popular with people who actually carried fixed blades for self-defense. Everyone else was buying 'Rambo survival knives' at the time.

They were made in small runs with various grip materials, micarta, bone, exotic wood, etc. and dealers took what was available. We retailed them for $49.95 in the mid 80's.

I cannot speak for the Samson Lion's Head on the Weehawk Boot Knife, but on the Fer de Lance, if you find one that has the Lion's Head, that should be a Custom Knife.

The only satin polished Fer de Lance I have ever seen was a Samson Custom.

The regular ones had a skull, with David. E. Steele under them, the person who designed the Fer de Lance and Bushmaster Knives. Then on the other side they would have, "Pacific Cutlery Corp." And the Butterfly Logo.

Personally, the Bushmaster, Fer de Lance, Weehawk Boot Knife and the Timba were some of the greatest Production Fixed Blades that were ever produced.

The Bushmaster in particular, showed a wonderful finish and a mirror finish on the spine that is something to behold. It is a beautiful knife.

A Nimravus might be cool, but I'll tell you what, you have not seen anything until you have handled these knives.

Anyone can take a piece of steel and grind it somewhat sloppy and then coat the blade to hide the imperfections. These knives are truly works of art.

In the age of high tech computers and even knives with circuitboard handles, beadblasted and coated everything; I often wonder whatever happened to the simple elegance of a mirror polished blade. It seems that to most of the buyers today, a tactical knife cant be elegant. I wonder if the masses would accept a knife like the Samson one pictured above. Or even if it was produced as a "tactical folder" (something most people that I see just say because they think its cool), which seems to be the new buzzword as far as a knife thats guaranteed to sell, would do. Ive always prefered lo-tech, and throwbacks to most of the modern things we see today (ie cars, balisongs, swords and chainmail). Maybe its just me. <shrug>

Nate,

Some people have excellent Digital Cameras that serve dual roles of Utility and Artistry.

By that I mean, I see abo****ely beautiful, stunning pictures taken by Chuck G. and others, the BM42 with the flowers jumps immediately to mind.

I just have a lowly Pretec DC600 and it actually takes fine, regular pictures. Actually, excellent pictures of people and objects from afar, etc.

It is limited in the "artistic" department, however.

If you click on the link in my Signature Line, you will see a PC Bushmaster, and with this limited Camera and my equally limited skills, the finish still comes through. Just on the flats. It is a beautiful knife.

We often lament the fact that the Era of BMs 40 Series and Customs is over. The passing of the Fixed Blades they used to produce should be equally lamented.

BM has proven that they are capable of greatness, the BM42 is a slice of that, a very thin slice of that pie they used to have.
