About 6 weeks ago I purchased the Premium Website Tonight Package on GoDaddy and the Shopping Cart with SSL to make a website. I invested around $500 on this ( too much in retrospect) and it's way over the top for a custom knife makers needs 999 pages ,1000 gb bandwith and 50 gb storage. It's supposed to be easy click and paste from 1000's of templates to make your site. With my grinder going down and other personal and machinery problems I haven't been able to put much work into it and am financially lacking from buying a new motor, VFD, Wheels and other stuff . At the same time everyday the domain sits dormant I'm losing money by not using a service already paid for. I'm wondering if any of you have experience with such things and would be willing to work on it . I can't pay you hundreds of dollars , but can afford a reasonable fee for helping and possibly a custom knife too as part of the payment (flat rate or hourly). I think all it needs is someone with time and understanding or experience with it to make the site and it could be done quite quickly. If anyone is interested please let me know and we can discuss payment , design etc. If this is the wrong place for this or someplace else is better suited to find a helper please let me know and I'll move it to the right forum or place .

Thanks
Fraser

I use it and while its not the best and cant do a few things i really want its not too bad.

I don't have the ability to put it together well which is why I'm looking for assistance, GoDaddy wants $1200 for a simple design which is way,way more then I can do . I'm stuck with the Website Tonight since it's already paid for. Maybe I should try to find a web design forum and ask there . But Since this forum is full of knife makers I thought they'd have a better understanding of what would be appropriate and look good for a knife makers site and am hoping there was a knife maker/ someone with experience with this stuff.

I use ZenCart and EVERYTIME someone asks about godaddy in the zencart forum they are told to stay away from godaddy if you want a smooth running store. The way I understand it godaddy is good for a web page but not the best for an eCommerce store.
If you want something easy to set up look into an Ebay pro store. If you can list something on ebay you can set up a store there.

Godaddy is a fine host, their user interface isn't the greatest and they try to upsell you all kinds of things you don't need that's my only knock.

Ebay is fine but your giving too many points to ebay/paypal IMHO.

Here's something you won't want to hear but I work w/ developers and for a very simple custom shop/site based on a e-cart your probably looking at around 6 grand. You might find folks willing to do it for less but it may be a gamble and you'll probably end up with a template site.

Take a look at big commerce. That's a cart we've been using on a few projects lately and it seems to have pretty decent features at a fairly low cost.

The problem is I've already spent the money so I'm stuck with what I got , I guess I should've asked beforehand people who have websites and how they did it. I was advised that if you don't know squat about html script writing etc that just buying a GoDaddy package is the way to go . Now I'm finding it difficult to set up , even simple things like the homepage let alone separate pages , shopping cart etc. Maybe there is a starving IT student somewhere who likes knives and can do this for under $200. Everything is there it's just a matter of knowing how to navigate the Website Tonight builder and make it look somewhat professional and functional. Like I said I went overboard and can have 999 pages and list 100's of products , I have the pieces of the puzzle but not the ability to put it together. Thanks for the suggestions for alternatives but since the money is spent I'd really like to use it .

Duffy99,

I've set up and created several webpages, but I'm not your guy to do a commerce site. That's my next learning curve for my own website(s). Anyway, you probably could have done OK with a shared hosting package at somewhere like Hostgator.com for about $15 to $30 a month. That would have given you many of applications, bandwidth, storage space, and email accounts.

Anyway, I believe your best bet for getting a page built is to ask around for recommendations. Some web people at your friend's work? Some college kid? Some unemployed web person in the local want ads? Of course be cautious, get a quote, sign a contract for completion date, don't pay in full up front, assign penalties for late completion, etc.

Good luck,

Mike L.

I use GoDaddy and ZenCart, but a friend set my site up for me.
I was getting hacked daily, and my friend said he couldn't figure it out. He suggested I try a site called Scriptlance. You post a project, and real computer literate programmer-types bid on doing your job. There is a ratings system (like feedback) for each programmer, and the programmers bid on doing your project. I used it, and within 3 days all my problems were solved. https://www.scriptlance.com/do/postproject/?p=1&new=project
Most of the bids are very affordable.

duffy, I'm probably not one to give advice on websites, as I keep mine in a constant state of brokenness, but here's a few suggestions anyway.

-Have GoDaddy install WordPress. It's free and probably the easiest way to get a site up quickly. Even for light ecommerce.

-Buy a copy of Serif WebPlus. Everything's drag and drop, but you still have to learn a bit how to use it and get into the code for certain things.

-Post a request in the new Services Wanted forum and put a link in your sig. I'm sure, you'll get a ton of students who would do it for a knife.

Fraser (duffy99),

Without your specific account information, I'm not able to say if what you have is the right product for you and, if not, what we cab set you up with to get you on the right track. Since I can see that you're on Twitter, if you can follow and DM me your account information (account number and call-in PIN) through @GoDaddy (so that it is kept from public eyes), I can take a look and see if I can help out. It might be that you would benefit from a different product such as our Quick Shopping Cart. Or, you might be able to scale back the WebSite Tonight package that you got to fewer pages where you can simply put more of your products on one page and use PayPal to accept payment. With your account information, we can assist you further.

Thanks,

Jeremi

I have dealt with GoDaddy and Website Tonight. The easiest way I found to build the pages is to choose a template with no content boxes, and place the boxes yourself. Probably will look for another web host when my year with GoDaddy is up. I think I made up a few new curses the first time I tried to build a page.

Im gonna pm you and show you the simple website I made and offer to help you setup something like that till you can figure what to do for a better setup. I wont charge anything but time is somethign I dont have tons of so may take a few days to a couple weeks depending.

DM sent .

Well I had a BF member do a bit of work on the site yesterday basically getting it formatted , setting up pages etc . I'll be adding different pics, rewriting in my own words the Bio and since I should have my grinder with new VFD and Motor working today hopefully have some new knives in the gallery / for sale area this week. A big thanks goes out to Anthe for working on it for free basically doing everything from scratch. It still needs a lot of work but Anthe got me way ahead , I've also been in contact with GoDaddy through twitter and will be calling to see what I should keep and they'll refund what isn't needed. I'm going to have them install wordpress and buy Serif WebPlus as suggested . You can go to www.dull-knives.com to see the progress so far . I will be changing images and content to more appropriate stuff but these were all I had on hand for Anthe to work with yesterday when he was making the template and working on content for me to later edit.

Hopefully I caught you before you made the purchase. The WebPlus suggestion was as an alternative to WordPress. The sites it makes won't work with WordPress, so it would be useless if WordPress was installed on the server.

If you want a design software that works with WordPress, the only one I know of is Artisteer, but it's not worth the money IMO, and you'll be better off just using a free or premium template.

No I haven't bought it , I'm going to just use the GoDaddy builder , I got a big help yesterday putting the basics in . I still have to call them and work out what products I'm going to keep and what can be refunded.
