Hello Everyone, this is my first post so forgive me if I screwed something up. I have a few questions regarding Michigan Knife laws, more specifically the Holland and Grand Rapids area. I have read all of the laws for Michigan but some are difficult to understand so hoping for clarification. First question, I own a Leatherman Wave Multitool and it says main blade length is 2.9 inches, Can I carry this in its sheath on my belt where ever I go? Or is there something illegal about it? My other question is that I just recently bought a Gerber Bear Grylls Paracord Fixed Blade knife with a blade length of 3.25 inches, and it has a hard sheath that attaches to a belt. I think it is considered a hunting knife but am not sure. Where can I carry this legally and how? Thanks so much everyone!

Michigan (state) law states you should be fine carrying either; definitely open carry in a visible sheath, but even concealed, as long as you have absolutely no intent on using it to do harm to another person.

So unless there are local ordinances in place where you live you should be fine...

Knife laws are often subject to on the spot interpretation by law enforcement. I was working on a newsletter article about the legality of carrying knives in my area. I asked a friend of mine, a deputy sheriff. He said "It depends. If your coming off the mountain with a limit of trout or a buck deer in the bed of your pickup, you get a pass on about anything. If you're hanging around the ATM wearing a ski mask at 2 am, I'll pop you for a pen knife."

While laws may address intent (difficult to determine), context is also important.
