I actually don't care too much for those 2 choices, either. I'm not trying to denigrate your powers of choice, I'm just giving my $.02 worth. For a first-time camp knife purchase, I'm of the opinion that you can't go wrong with a Cold Steel SRK. It'll cost you about $45 from
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com and it's a proven, sturdy camp piece. Plus, the low cost makes for a safe trial knife, once you learn what you do and don't like. One caveat is that it's carbon steel, not stainless, so you need to keep the blade dry (wipe it off after using) and lightly oil it before storing. There's my input
If you are adamant on one of the 2 choices that you mentioned, I'd opt for the Buck Vanguard. I don't like serrations on my main camp knife, and the Buck can be had for cheaper than the SOG. In fact, a very nice option for the Vanguard is found here, at Cabela's:

Sorry for the huge link, I don't know how to hyperlink in the text. The S30V steel of this Vanguard holds an edge much, much better than the 420HC of the regular edition.
If you detailed the camp chores that you're needing the knife to accomplish, we can be of much greater assistance to you
