Hello, new to the forums here. I need your guys help deciding between two knives. You guys know more than I do so I thought you guys could help. I'm having trouble deciding between the Buck Vanguard or a sog northwest ranger.
I'm going to be camping, hunting, and just general outdoor tasks. Help please.

Buy one and see how you like it. If you don't like it, buy the other. Now you've got two knives and you win! :D

Buy 2 Swamp Rats.. Or better yet, a Busse and a Swamp Rat! Then you'll never need another knife again for the rest of your life!

Seriously, plan on buying more than one knife. Find the one that fits your hand, then use the hell out of it. You will either love it, or learn what you really need. Most of us have purchased several knives in the pursuit of the "ideal" knife.

General outdoor tasks? Could you elaborate?

I don't think either will perform the way I'd want a knife to perform in outdoor situations, but reading the specs, if you are stuck in your considerations, the Ranger, with it's 3/4 tang *might* be the better of the two knives.

I actually don't care too much for those 2 choices, either. I'm not trying to denigrate your powers of choice, I'm just giving my $.02 worth. For a first-time camp knife purchase, I'm of the opinion that you can't go wrong with a Cold Steel SRK. It'll cost you about $45 from http://www.cheaperthandirt.com and it's a proven, sturdy camp piece. Plus, the low cost makes for a safe trial knife, once you learn what you do and don't like. One caveat is that it's carbon steel, not stainless, so you need to keep the blade dry (wipe it off after using) and lightly oil it before storing. There's my input :)

If you are adamant on one of the 2 choices that you mentioned, I'd opt for the Buck Vanguard. I don't like serrations on my main camp knife, and the Buck can be had for cheaper than the SOG. In fact, a very nice option for the Vanguard is found here, at Cabela's: http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ...&parentType=index&indexId=cat20889&hasJS=true
Sorry for the huge link, I don't know how to hyperlink in the text. The S30V steel of this Vanguard holds an edge much, much better than the 420HC of the regular edition.

If you detailed the camp chores that you're needing the knife to accomplish, we can be of much greater assistance to you :)

thanks for your guys input. The things i'll be doing are making a bow drill,a little woodwork.gutting some animals as I do hunt. Those all sound like good options, but I'm 16 and it's up to my parents ...I know ,I know. If none of those what about the buck nighthawk???

For the type of chores you'll be using the knife for, I would probably hand you a Mora 2000. Excellent 12c27 stainless steel, good gripping handle, non military look (for parents sake), handles woodworking chores well and is $30.00. You might also consider picking up something like this.

Thanks guys for the information. after hearing what you guys said I talked to my parents and they said they'll buy me a mora of my choice, and the buck vanguard
to see which one i like better. Thanks

I also like Longbows suggestion about something like a SwissArmyKnife.
I really like my Trekker Model. Very handy and the saw blade is a great little plus.

For the tasks you mentioned, the Mora and the Vanguard sound like 2 very solid choices. Your parents are generous to buy them both for you; be sure and thank them  :)

I know definetly. I'm gonna get the mora 2000 and the buck vanguard with the rubber handle. I'll let you know which one I choose but i still use the other one!The only thing is i don't like the sheath for mora 2000. Any other options???

SOG Northwest Ranger is a nice general outdoor knife. Don't just give up on it. I have one. For the price, it is not a bad knife. Add the SAK Trekker and you have a great combination.
