Need ideas for a piece of steel...

I've got a piece of A2 that I'm not sure what to make with it. It'd be stock removal, not forging.

It's 9 x 1.5 and 3/16 thick

My only thought was a bushcraft type knife, but it seems like a thick blade for a fairly small knife

Any suggestions?

Not what you want to hear, but set it aside until you are going to visit a friend with a forge and forge it out there. That would forge a nice santoku.

In the mean time, but a new bar of 1/6 to 1/8" steel.

You could make a hollow ground hunter or something like this

Make a full tang hunter then have it professionally heat treated, then apply what ever type of scale you like.

I’ve recently had special requests for 3/16 or thicker hunters.. kinda crazy to me but a couple just cleaned out some deer with them and said they were perfect. Personal opinions of what works for them I guess.

If you have it and want to use it then go ahead and make a full tang or a couple of small edc blades.

You can always grind distal taper ....this one is from 5mm thick steel .Weight of blank is only 125 grams after grinding , it was 280 grams before grinding ;)

Had to look twice to realize this was tapered back to front AND top to bottom. That’s nifty.

I use 3/16 for all my knives pretty much i just finished up some field knives for a few customers they are 3/16 x 1.3 x 9.25

Thanks ! That's happens when you chasing perfect plunge line . . . . . This one is second one I make this way .On this one I grind ONLY one side ;)

I don't think that's a bad size for a small belt knife. A full flat grind in 3/16" will still be a very nice slicer if you keep it thin at the edge. Tapering both ends isn't a bad idea, or you could simply get it surface ground to whatever thickness you like.
